ABOUT WVL
Wisconsin Virtual Learning is a K4–12 online public, non-instrumentality charter school chartered through the Northern Ozaukee School District, serving students across the state. We are a non-instrumentality charter school, which means our staff is employed by WVL rather than by the district. Our students learn from home on a school-provided laptop, and our staff works from home too, but this is not a hands-off program. We combine coursework with real human connection, and we stay close to our kids and families along the way. We are a small, tight-knit staff that leans on each other and cares a lot about doing right by every learner.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a full-time position that blends two kinds of teaching. Part of your week is spent teaching high school English, leading live classes. The other part is spent working with our alternative education students, the students who need a different path to graduation, guiding them through their coursework and meeting with them one-on-one (minimum) every week.
YOUR ENGLISH CLASSES
You will teach at least two high school English courses. Your assigned courses may include English 9, Communications, American and World Literature.
-
Provide live virtual instruction twice a week in each of your courses.
-
Maintain and improve the online lessons that go with them, keeping them current, clear, and welcoming.
-
Grade student work and give feedback that helps students grow as readers and writers.
-
Stay in regular contact with students and families by virtual meetings, email, and phone, reaching out early and often when a student falls behind.
YOUR ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION STUDENTS
For the alternative education part of your role, you will teach and support students as they work through their coursework in Edgenuity, our alternative education platform.
-
Meet one-on-one (at minimum) with each of your alternative education students to check in, set goals, work through roadblocks, and hold them accountable.
-
Guide students through their Edgenuity coursework and help them stay on pace toward the credits they need.
-
Build individualized and personalized learning plans that fit each student's pace, goals, and life.
-
Model social and problem-solving skills, and teach the habits that help a struggling student get back on track.
-
Monitor attendance and progress, keep records up to date in Skyward, and follow WVL's participation process when a student disengages.
-
Celebrate progress out loud, big wins and small ones, so students who are used to falling behind get to feel what winning looks like.
SHARED ACROSS BOTH ROLES
-
Build real, trusting relationships with your students and families.
-
Work closely with the school counselor, special education staff, and Student Learning Advocates to wrap support around each student.
-
Option to run at least one student club that meets monthly during the school year.
-
Contribute to our school culture by taking part in weekly staff meetings, professional development, and school-wide activities.
SCHEDULE
This is a full-time position. Your week is split between your English classes and your alternative education students, and includes office hours. Your remaining prep time is yours to manage: planning, grading, contacting families, and completing team projects.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
-
A valid Wisconsin DPI teaching license in English/Language Arts (grades 9–12) and in Alternative Education.
-
A bachelor's degree in English, education, or a related field.
-
High school teaching experience, or experience working with high school-age students in a similar setting, is preferred.
-
Strong organization and communication skills, since this role balances live classes, individual student plans, and weekly meetings.
-
Comfort teaching online and learning new tools. Experience with Edgenuity, Canvas, or similar platforms is a plus.

Salary: Based on experience, qualifications, and skills
