Position Details
As part of Antigo High School’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality athletic experiences for our student-athletes, all paid and volunteer coaches who are on the coaching staff and are not licensed teachers must complete the following WIAA-mandated training requirements:
Required Courses
(to be completed before coaching your second year)

Coaching Fundamentals Course
-
Sports First Aid Course
These courses are offered through the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) at www.nfhslearn.com.
The Antigo Athletic Department will reimburse the cost of both required courses upon successful completion.
Additional WIAA Certification Requirements
Beginning with the 2017–18 school year, all WIAA paid coaches shall be certified and will maintain certification in:

First Aid
-
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
-
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation
These certifications ensure that all coaches working with our student-athletes meet WIAA standards for safety, preparation, and professional conduct. Thank you for your commitment to our athletic programs and for helping us provide a positive experience for every student.
Head Coach Responsibilities
The Head Coach shall:
-
be responsible for all matters relating to the organization and administration of the team under his/her direction;
-
enforce all rules of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) related to his/her sport;
-
assign duties to equipment managers and assistant coaches and evaluate their performance;
-
plan all practice sessions;
-
prepare public information releases regarding his/her sport;
-
assist in planning special events such as Assemblies, Parents Night, Homecoming, Banquets, etc.;
-
maintain an accurate and current squad roster and submit copies to the Athletic Director;
-
cooperate with the Athletic Director in setting up physical examination schedules and verify that no candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her examination card is completed and insurance coverage is in effect;
-
assign at least one (1) coach to be with the squad at all times and supervise the locker room until all squad members have left the building;
-
assign at least one (1) coach to ensure that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used;
-
prepare a detailed equipment and supply request and submit it to the Athletic Director;
-
arrange for the presentation of team awards through the Athletic Director;
-
recommend teams that may be scheduled and officials to be employed;
-
enforce rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety;
-
report injuries to the Athletic Trainer.
Coaches should exercise great care in dealing with all injuries, particularly those of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should ensure that the injured athlete is receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure signed approval from both the doctor and the parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again in athletic activities.
Assistant Coach Responsibilities
(Includes Varsity Assistants, Reserve, Freshman, and Junior High Coaches)
The Assistant Coach shall:

support the head coach in the conduct of his/her particular sport and the total athletic program;

fulfill all responsibilities assigned by the head coach;
-
be prepared to assume the responsibility of the head coach, if and when necessary.
