The School District of Beloit is seeking a Paraprofessional- Elementary Early Literacy to provide timely, targeted reading support to elementary students who are not yet meeting grade-level literacy expectations. The position focuses on strengthening the foundational skills students need to become successful readers, including print concepts, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, fluency, oral language, vocabulary, and basic comprehension.

The paraprofessional works under the instructional direction of a licensed reading specialist. The reading specialist identifies student needs, establishes instructional priorities, plans or approves intervention lessons, selects district-approved materials, monitors the quality of implementation, and reviews student progress. The paraprofessional reinforces and practices these teacher-planned skills through individual or small-group instruction.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Daily Intervention Delivery and Options

  • Provide individual or small-group lessons, typically 10 to 20 minutes, according to the intervention plan and student age or need.
  • Begin with a brief review of previously taught skills, provide explicit modeling and guided practice, and end with an individual student check.
  • Use clear routines, frequent student responses, immediate corrective feedback, and cumulative practice.
  • Use shared sound boxes, beginning-sound materials, sound bins, alphabet and vowel materials, decodable text, and other district-approved resources.
  • Support ARC Read to Me and print-concept intervention when assigned, including book handling, directionality, one-to-one matching, oral language, vocabulary, retelling, and active engagement with text.
  • Provide phonemic-awareness intervention in skills such as identifying sounds, blending, segmenting, and manipulating phonemes, followed by letter connections when appropriate.

Documentation and Collaboration

  • Record student attendance, lesson focus, materials used, level of prompting, and student performance after each session.
  • Complete brief progress-monitoring checks at the frequency established by the reading specialist.
  • Meet regularly with the reading specialist to review data, receive lesson plans or instructional priorities, and adjust student groups.
  • Communicate concerns promptly, including inconsistent attendance, lack of progress, student frustration, or a mismatch between the intervention and identified need.

Measures of Effectiveness

  • Student growth on the targeted foundational skill or district-approved progress-monitoring measure
  • Percentage of planned intervention sessions completed
  • Evidence that students can apply taught skills with decreasing adult support
  • Accuracy and completeness of attendance and intervention records
