JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Athletics and Activities provides leadership and coordination for all athletic and activity programs in the district, which includes ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and district regulations, staff supervision and budget.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops, coordinates, and maintains athletic programs and co-curricular activity programs.
• Schedules contests within the established guidelines set forth by WIAA, Conference, and the Board.
• Files all reports requested by WIAA, Conference, and the Board.
• Serves as the contact person for the district with the WIAA, Conference, and the WADA organization.
• Schedules facilities for school-sponsored practices and competitions.
• Works with facilities to schedule non-sponsored events and activities and to review site preparation for athletic events and activities.
• Prepares a calendar that includes conference and non-conference games and events.
• Trains and schedules additional staff as event workers and assumes general responsibility for proper supervision of home competitions.
• Assumes responsibility for ticket sales at events and maintains proper handling and accounting for funds.
• Hires officials for competitions, collects all necessary information and arranges for their payment.
• Schedules and coordinates event supervision duties with local law enforcement and EMT services.
• Keeps accurate records of all student required forms which include WIAA physical and parent permits, district medical release forms, and completed codes of conduct.
• Collects and maintains athletic injury reports from coaches at the end of each season.
• Coordinates SHS drug testing program for students in athletics, activities, and students with parking passes.
• Schedules transportation for all teams and when appropriate, spectators.
• Coordinates travel arrangements and overnight accommodations for student activity groups or teams and their advisors and coaches.
• Plans and coordinates code of conduct meetings, parent meetings, pep rallies, award programs, recognition programs and any other activity related to athletics and co-curricular activities.
• Supervises the maintenance of athletic equipment, uniforms, facilities, and maintains athletic inventory.
• Works collaboratively with the students, coaches, parents, and community to promote the School District of Superior athletic and activity programs.
• Communicates with school community (parents, students, media, etc.) regarding upcoming events and highlights.
• Evaluates all programs on an annual basis and makes recommendations for improvements to the District Administrator and Board.
2. Develops and monitors adherence to the athletic/activity code of conduct.
• Works with principals and coaches to appropriately investigate reports of violations of the code of conduct.
• Coordinates a hearing process for violations of the code of conduct.
• Informs parents/guardians of code of conduct violations in a timely manner.
• Maintains all records concerning code of conduct violations.
• Involves staff in the periodic review of the code of conduct.
3. Prepares and administers the budget for athletic and activity programs and the Sports Complex.
• Reviews and approves all purchase orders for athletic and co-curricular teams.
• Meets with coaches and advisors during the budget process to review requests for the upcoming school year.
• Requests payment for all coach and advisor payments, staff working at events, officials, and transportation.
• Reviews and approves coach’s and advisor’s travel requests for clinics, state, tournaments and conference meetings.
• Ensures compliance with district cash handling and management policies.
• Coordinates the receipt and disbursement of student body cash funds.
• Administers the athletic insurance program.
• Plans and coordinates fund-raising activities.
4. Provides effective leadership in the areas of human resources through selecting, developing, evaluating, supervising, and retaining quality coaches.
• Participates in the selection of highly effective coaches in a fair and equitable manner based on school and district needs.
• Evaluates coaches on their performance using multiple data sources and completes a coach evaluation form annually.
• Develops and maintains an updated coach’s handbook.
• Supervises coaches and other staff scheduled to work at athletic/activity events.
• Develops and administers an orientation program for coaches and advisors.
• Conducts coach meetings regularly.
• Provides off-hour contact information for coaches in the event of emergencies.
5. Supports, manages, and oversees the athletic/activity organization, operation and use of resources.
• Demonstrates and communicates a working knowledge and understanding of the state’s public education rules, regulations and laws, and school district policies and procedures.
• Establishes and enforces rules and procedures to ensure a safe, secure, efficient, and orderly facility and grounds.
• Attends home events on a regular basis to maintain visibility, be accessible to all stakeholders, and to ensure proper supervision.
• Represents the district at all conference and state athletic and activity meetings.
• Collaborates and networks with districts colleagues, the community and other stakeholders to effectively utilize the resources and expertise available.
• Aligns vision of the athletic/activity department with the strategic plan of the district.
6. Demonstrates behavior consistent with legal, ethical, and professional standards, and by engaging in continuous professional development and contributing to the profession.
• Models professional behavior and is culturally responsive to students, staff, and other stakeholders.
• Provides leadership in sharing ideas and information with staff and other professionals.
• Attends conferences as necessary to keep informed of athletic and activity trends and practices.
• Attends Board meetings as required.
7. Performs all other duties assigned by Administration.
• Provides student supervision during the school day as directed by the building principal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid Administrator License from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
• Valid Provisional Educator License in teaching or pupil services from WI DPI.
• Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related field.
• Minimum of three (3) years teaching/pupil services experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience working in an administrative role.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Capable on a continuous basis of standing, sitting, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, twisting; repetitive movement of both hands and feet; seeing with both near and far visual acuity and to hear.
2. Capable on a frequent basis of walking and moving, climbing stairs, lifting from floor to waist (up to #50), waist to shoulders (up to #25).
3. Capable on an occasional basis of pushing; pulling; lifting from shoulders to overhead (up to #10).
