DESCRIPTION:
Indian Community School, Inc. is seeking a qualified Physical Education/Health Teacher (1.0 FTE) for grades 5-8. A successful teacher in this position will encourage, inspire, challenge, and teach students in safety, wellness, healthy living, and physical fitness. The teacher will collaborate to cultivate an understanding of the relationship between a healthy body, spirit, and mind. The ICS Health/PE program is offered in an equitable, multicultural setting and teaches all children to think deeply, critically, and creatively. The ideal candidate will possess strong background, knowledge, and skills that support a positive, engaging learning environment by demonstrating the following:
- Knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports.
- Responsible for the development of effective lessons, units, formative and summative assessments that are aligned to ICS Learning Targets and Board-approved standards.
- Implements best instructional practices to provide student-centered learning environments that ensure the success of all students.
- Facilitates and supports collaboration in weaving indigenous teachings throughout physical fitness, wellness, and health curriculum.
- Demonstrates flexibility with the use of changing technology both in the classroom and as part of professional planning.
- Provides feedback through standards-based grading and reporting practices.
- Effectively communicates with parents/guardians about their child’s/children’s academic progress and behavior through conferences, report cards, progress reports, and other means.
- Proactively participates and collaborates with other staff in all-staff and faculty meetings, curriculum team meetings, educational conferences, school committees and professional development seminars and workshops.
- Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the classroom through the use of positive classroom management.
- Responsible for developing and implementing the school’s health education program.
- Incorporate American Indian culture, language, traditions and the seven Sacred Gifts into the curriculum and educational programming.
- Actively participate in learning about American Indian culture, language, traditions, and the Seven Sacred Gifts.
- Integrate the Our Ways Teaching and Learning Framework™ into academic content areas.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with students, families, staff, and administration that are positive, constructive, and focused on team collaboration.
- Comply with State Laws in reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Demonstration of strong organization, time-management, and oral, written, technical, and interpersonal communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree
Evidence of current certification by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as Physical Education Teacher
Must hold 1530 (Physical Education) and 1910 (Health) licenses
Experience is preferred, but not necessary for hiring
Successful teaching experience in urban school(s) preferred
