POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Lead Teacher (4K–8) serves as a teacher-leader and instructional model at WSTEM. This position maintains primary classroom teaching responsibilities while supporting schoolwide instructional excellence and fidelity to WSTEM’s five instructional pillars: Multi-Age Instruction, Interdisciplinary Learning, Science & Engineering Integration, Authentic Learning Experiences, and Collaboration & Community.

 

The Lead Teacher bridges classroom practice and school leadership by modeling rigorous, student-centered instruction and supporting colleagues in curriculum development, STEM/Project-Based Learning (PBL) implementation, and continuous improvement efforts. This role ensures consistency, innovation, and academic excellence across grade levels.

 
 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

a. Instructional Excellence & Modeling

  • Teach assigned classes while modeling high-quality, standards-aligned instruction.
  • Demonstrate strong implementation of STEM integration and Project-Based Learning.
  • Implement WSTEM’s five instructional pillars with consistency and rigor.
  • Develop and share exemplar interdisciplinary units, assessments, and instructional strategies.
  • Promote student-centered learning, academic rigor, and strong classroom culture.
  • Utilize formative and summative data to inform instruction and accelerate student growth.

b. Teacher Leadership & Coaching

  • Provide peer coaching and instructional support aligned to school priorities.
  • Facilitate collaborative planning meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  • Support onboarding, mentorship, and development of new teachers.
  • Assist with vertical curriculum alignment across multi-age grade bands (K/1, 2/3, 4/5).
  • Promote consistency in instructional practices and performance-based assessment.

c. Curriculum & Program Development

  • Collaborate with administration on curriculum refinement and programmatic design.
  • Support development of high-quality interdisciplinary PBL units aligned to Wisconsin Academic Standards.
  • Assist in designing performance-based assessments, rubrics, and exhibition structures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of instructional systems and STEM programming.
  • Support implementation of recognized STEM initiatives such as PLTW, EiE, and Lego League.

d. Data, Accountability & Model Fidelity

  • Analyze student achievement data to identify trends and areas for growth.
  • Support teachers in effective use of formative and summative assessment tools.
  • Contribute to charter accountability reporting related to instructional outcomes.
  • Monitor and reinforce fidelity to WSTEM’s instructional model and academic expectations.

e. School Culture & Community Leadership

  • Model professionalism, collaboration, and a growth mindset.
  • Support positive school culture and restorative practices.
  • Partner with families to support student success and engagement.
  • Participate in exhibitions, engineering days, community events, and school initiatives.
  • Serve as a culture carrier who reinforces WSTEM’s mission and vision.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Wisconsin teaching licensure (appropriate grade level and/or content area).
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of successful teaching experience.
  • Strong collaboration, facilitation, and leadership skills.
  • Experience using data to drive academic improvement.
  • Background in staff coaching and talent development.
  • Demonstrated instructional excellence and strong classroom management.
  • Ability to build positive, productive relationships with students and families.
  • Experience implementing interdisciplinary learning and differentiated instruction

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or formally leading teachers.
  • Experience in a charter or innovative school setting.
  • Leadership experience such as department chair or grade-level lead.
  • Training in instructional coaching or performance-based assessment.
  • Experience with STEM integration and/or Project-Based Learning (PBL).
  • Experience using educational technology tools to enhance instruction.
  • Experience launching or expanding a school program.
  • Experience teaching in a multi-age classroom environment.
  • Experience a team-teaching based classroom environment.
