Position Summary:

The Aquatics Director oversees the day-to-day operations, programming, maintenance, and administration of the RUSD Aquatic Center. The Director supervises staff and student employees, ensures proper hiring, training, and certification of lifeguards and instructors, and maintains compliance with all health, safety, and water-quality regulations. The Director develops and promotes aquatic programs that serve students and the broader community while ensuring safe and efficient facility operations.

 The Director is responsible for managing facility usage, program revenue, community partnerships, and budgets, and supports district goals through effective program management, staff supervision, and operational oversight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties represent the primary responsibilities of the position. Additional duties may be assigned.

·         Oversees the daily operation of the Aquatic Center, including facility scheduling, staffing, and program coordination.

·         Supervises aquatic center staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, and student employees.

·         Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates aquatic center personnel.

·         Ensures staff maintain required certifications and conducts or coordinates certification training when necessary.

·         Develops, promotes, and implements aquatic programs including swim lessons, safety training, and community programs.

·         Coordinate facility use with district programs, athletics, school administration, physical education classes, and community organizations.

·         Coordinates with district athletic programs and coaches to support swim practices, competitions, and aquatic-related athletic events.

·         Coordinate facility use with approved outside organizations in accordance with district policies and facility use agreements.

·         Oversees maintenance of pools and aquatic systems, including water chemistry, filtration, climate control, and cleanliness.

·         Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing aquatic facilities.

·         Monitors and maintains inventories of aquatic equipment, supplies, and safety materials.

·         Works with district maintenance staff and vendors to coordinate facility repairs and preventative maintenance.

·         Develops and monitors the aquatic center operating budget, provides recommendations for funding needs, and assists with cost estimating and fiscal management.

·         Oversees collection, documentation, and deposit of program fees and facility rental revenues in accordance with district financial procedures.

·         Maintains records related to facility usage, participation, and program revenues.

·         Serves as the primary contact for aquatic center facility use requests.

·         Responds to emergencies and ensures staff are trained in emergency response procedures.

·         Ensures appropriate lifeguard staffing levels and supervision are maintained in accordance with applicable safety standards and district policies.

·         Maintains incident and accident reports and ensures proper documentation.

·         Represents the district at community meetings and promotes aquatic center programs and services.

·         Develops partnerships with community organizations to expand aquatic programming.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Aquatics Center Director supervises aquatic center personnel including:

·         Program staff, including assistant director and manager

·         Lifeguards

·         Swim instructors

·         Student employees, Seasonal or part-time aquatic staff

Responsibilities include staff scheduling, training, evaluation, and ensuring compliance with certification requirements.

Education and Experience:

·         High school diploma required.

·         Associate’s or Bachelor degree in recreation management, sports management, education, or a related field preferred.

·         Minimum of three (3) years of experience related to aquatic facility operations, aquatic programming, or lifeguard supervision.

·         Experience managing or supervising staff preferred.

 Licenses and Certifications:

The following certifications are required or must be obtained within a timeframe established by the district:

·         American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification

·         American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR/AED Instructor Certification

·         American Red Cross First Aid Certification

·         Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or equivalent

·         Valid driver’s license meeting district insurance requirements

·         Mandatory Reporting, Blood Borne Pathogen and other RUSD required safety training (ALICE, etc.) within 12 months of employment.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of aquatic facility operations and maintenance

·         Knowledge of swimming pool water chemistry, temperature, and cleanliness standards

·         Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing public swimming pools

·         Ability to recruit, train, and supervise aquatic staff

·         Ability to develop and implement aquatic programming

·         Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures

·         Ability to gather data, maintain records, and prepare reports

·         Ability to make administrative and operational decisions

·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills

·         Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and community members

·         Skill in the use of computers and common office software

·         Ability to read, understand, and enforce safety procedures

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment. The position requires stamina and mobility to:

·         Stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and climb

·         Lift and move pool equipment and furniture

·         Assist in the rescue and removal of individuals from the pool when necessary

·         Swim distances and dive to pool depths as required for certification

·         Lift up to 150 pounds with assistance or proper equipment

 he position also requires the ability to work in an office environment using standard office equipment including computers, telephones, and radios. Vision and hearing must be sufficient to monitor activity in crowded and noisy aquatic environments.

 Work Schedule:

The Aquatics Center Director may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including evenings, early mornings, weekends, and holidays, based on facility operations and programming needs.
