JOB GOAL:
Working as a child advocate and within the service framework of legal and recognized professional standards, and by District policy, the School Counselor is responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive counseling program to help students overcome problems that impede learning, and to assist students in making educational, vocational, and life plans that hold promise for their fulfillment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Establish, deliver, and maintain an all-inclusive school counseling program to optimize the educational experiences for District students.
2. Work with the building principal(s) and pupil services staff to develop and maintain an assessment system for monitoring the progress of students and ensure that any student who falls below the proficient level receives appropriate and timely intervention and support.
3. Perform casework services relating to student maladjustments, including the development of programs to identify student needs, analyze situations, formulate a reasoned conclusion as to a preferred course of action, and provide services to effect a remedy.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling services and collaborate with pupil services staff to effectuate program modifications.
5. Provide personal/social counseling to facilitate the adjustment of students to problems/situations, learn successful problem-solving techniques, and modify attitudes and patterns of behavior.
6. Offer educational and/or career counseling to students and their families by using appropriate school records, test scores, ability, achievement, aptitude, and work experience, expressed feelings, and ambitions to help in the selection of appropriate classes for the student’s existing life goals.
7. Interpret post-high school opportunities and provide occupational information to students.
8. Implement direct interventions and prevention programs.
9. Conduct classroom lessons in the areas of personal, social, and/or career development.
10. Provide professional leadership as a role model and provide support, patience, a friendly attitude, and general guidance that produce positive efforts by students.
11. Offer information to increase parent understanding, constructive participation in resolving their child’s needs, and knowledge and use of appropriate available resources.
12. Initiate referrals to community service providers, making available to the agencies a thorough summary of why the referral is needed, and act as a liaison between the agency and the District.
13. Assist with school, class, or District plans during a crisis.
14. Develop procedures for the accumulation of data, compilation of reports, and a system of reporting to ensure effective performance.
15. Support District initiatives to make schools safer and more effective while fostering tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity in the school community.
16. Foster positive and effective working relationships with administration, staff, students, outside agencies, families, and community representatives.
17. Utilize technology as an enhancement to student and staff learning.
18. Uphold strict confidentiality of personnel and student information and records.
19. Maintain professional appearance and professional relations at all times.
20. Participate in professional growth activities.
21. Perform other related assignments as designated by the principal or other District staff.
22. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s Degree in School Counseling.
2. Current license to practice as a professional School Counselor in the State of Wisconsin.
3. Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, in written format and orally, and in small and large group settings.
4. Understanding of the psychosocial development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences as they interact with the educational process.
DESIRED:
1. Successful experience in a school counseling program and professional training in child/adolescent development/counseling, consultation/assessment, and factors influencing the learning process.
2. Specific knowledge in the areas of personality theory, counseling theory and practices, individual and group theory and practices, special and exceptional student programming, mental health or agency experience with children, and federal, state, and local laws regarding school practices.
