Washington Island School is seeking a versatile and passionate Social Studies educator to join our island community. We are looking for a "student-first" professional who views history, civics, and economics not just as subjects, but as tools to help students navigate a global society.

As a teacher in a small rural district, you will have the unique opportunity to build deep, multi-year relationships with students. You will design inquiry-based learning experiences that meet Wisconsin Standards for Social Studies, fostering a classroom where critical thinking is the norm and every student’s potential is recognized and nurtured.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute rigorous, engaging lessons that prioritize the C3 Framework (College, Career, and Civic Life), encouraging students to evaluate evidence and communicate complex conclusions.

  • Deliver content across the 5–12 spectrum, ensuring compliance with Wisconsin Act 31 (Tribal Nations) and preparing students for the Wisconsin Civics Graduation Requirement.

  • Analyze student performance data to create personalized learning plans, provide targeted interventions, and set measurable achievement goals.

  • Serve as a mentor and advisor to a small cohort of students, supporting their social-emotional growth and college/career readiness.

  • Community Partnership: Build proactive, trusting relationships with families and guardians; we believe student success is a collaborative effort between the island and the school.

  • Professionalism & Culture: Contribute to a "continuous improvement" culture by seeking feedback, participating in PLCs, and maintaining active communication with all stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education or a related field.

  • Licensure: Must hold or be eligible for a Wisconsin DPI License (e.g., 1701 Social Studies) covering the 5–12 or 4–12 grades.

    • Note: Candidates with a "One-Year with Stipulations" license are encouraged to apply if they are on a path to full licensure.

  • Experience: Successful classroom experience is required; experience in rural or small-school settings is highly preferred.

  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to seamlessly integrate educational technology into daily instruction.

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: The ability to be resourceful, adapt to a fast-paced environment, and take a professional, solution-oriented approach to the unique challenges of island education.

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to supervise students in various settings (classroom, field trips, outdoor spaces) to ensure constant safety.

  • Readiness to work in a unique geographic location that requires a high degree of independence and community integration.
