- Master’s degree in School Social Work
- A minimum of one year of experience being involved in providing services to special education students.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive, constructive, relationships with students, staff, parents, and public.
Position Description:
The Secondary Special Education Social Worker provides support to students with disabilities and their families, addressing social, emotional, and behavioral challenges that impact their education. They work as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure students receive appropriate services and support, both within the school and in the wider community. This includes developing and implementing intervention strategies for students at the intensive level but prior to a special education referral, providing counseling, and connecting students and families with necessary resources in the district and in the community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluation and Planning
1. MLSS and IDEA Evaluation Processes:
- Participate in weekly Student Services meetings
- Conduct observations and stakeholder interviews
- Providing reports to teams that summarize observational data and suggest intervention strategies
- Collaborate with Middle School staff to provide robust continuum of supports to benefit all students.
2. IEP Team Participation:
- Collaborate with IEP team members to share and analyze data related to student social-emotional development.
- Provide recommendations for social work interventions based on student data.
- Provide recommendations on how progress will be measured, including what data points will be collected and how they will be collected/evaluated.
- Provide data collected from social worker-provided interventions in a format consistent with other service providers on the IEP team.
- Lead conversation regarding student progress in the intervention to determine if continuation with current plan is appropriate or if the team needs to explore other options for intervention.
- Assist case manager in writing the IEP by providing language that reflects the data collection and social worker observations; writing SMARTIE goals that reflect the purpose of social worker services; and developing the language for specially designed instruction.
3. Direct Services:
- Provide direct services to students at the intensive level within the MLSS and to students with disabilities.
- Develop and facilitate/co-facilitate groups for students
- Advocate for students’ rights and needs within the school and community settings
- Respond to and manage crises related to student mental health, safety, or behavior
Collaboration and Consultation
- Collaborate with building and district staff, families, and community providers
- Participate in building and district-level meetings and training as assigned
- Demonstrates effective communication with students, families, staff and community members
- Establish and maintain a consistent communication system with staff and parents
Professional Growth
- Demonstration of Social Worker principles, practices and ethical standards per the National Association of School Social Workers
- Understands IDEA and Section 504 and the protections they provide for students
- Assume responsibility for and complete a professional growth plan in Frontline.
- Engage in constructive dialogue with administrator/evaluator
- Attend appropriate professional meetings and conventions.
District Description:
The district includes Sauk City and Prairie du Sac, two “next door” villages known as Sauk Prairie. They are located on the beautiful Wisconsin River. Thirteen towns and the village of Merrimac are also in the district. The area features rolling hills, meadows, bluffs, forests, lakes and streams. The district offers small-town, rural living with easy access to the Madison urban area (25 miles) and to the Wisconsin Dells recreation area (28 miles). The district serves almost 2,900 students, and comprises six learning communities with a high school, middle school and four elementary schools. Sauk Prairie High School is a comprehensive 9-12 high school offering a challenging and rigorous program of study for approximately 800 students.
