The Director of School Safety & Security oversees all aspects of keeping Racine Unified School District (RUSD) safe. Develops and implements the policies, procedures, and guidelines that assist the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent, and school administration in providing a safe learning environment.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Mangement or a related field 
  • 7 or more years of successful experience in a police department or other safety/security-related field.
  • Experience working within a school environment, especially as a School Resource Officer (SRO) or part-time school officer is preferred.
  • Previous experience as an SRO (School Resource Officer) preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid Driver’s license required

Core Competencies:
The Director of School Safety must demonstrate excellent leadership skills and vision as they are the district’s leader in developing, implementing and managing programs designed to effectively address the district’s security and safety
needs. This position is responsible for coordinating and maintaining a comprehensive district safety structure which includes working with local law enforcement agencies, local municipalities, as well as other outside entities when
appropriate. Strong skills in organizing resources and establishing priorities is a must. Experience in and knowledge of working with diverse populations, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to supervise large groups along
with the ability to maintain composure and take control in crisis situations is required.

Essential Functions:
Provides leadership and direction in overseeing all aspects of the safety and security operations of the district
  • Leads the Division of School Safety and Security which includes an Assistant Director and all designated safety staff and personnel in the district.
  • Provides technical advice regarding security issues and needs to the BOE, Superintendent and building administration
  • Ensures efficient and effective dispatching of safety personnel to buildings, events, and other necessary functions.
  • Monitors, directs, schedules, and facilitates the operations and efforts of all safety personnel.
  • Communicates effectively with families, students, and the greater community.
  • Continuously advocates for the district’s overall wellbeing through the development/maintenance of multiple and layered safety measures.
  • Formulates new safety and security policies and procedures to include research into new technologies and overall best practices.
  • Establishes short-term plans and long-range organizational goals as it relates to safety and security. Leads the development of school and district level safety plans.
  • Oversees the purchase/installation of security equipment and conducts safety/security inspections at all district sites.
  • Oversees the training of safety personnel, school and district-level administrators and other employee groups on updated safety policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • Leads the hiring and selection of safety staff and oversees related personnel matters.
  • Participates on any relevant district level committees/meetings as needed and/or required.
  • Updates and evaluates the latest practices in district/school safety and security while staying abreast of current trends within the field by attending relevant seminars and conferences.
  • Work with the Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and building level leadership during emergency situations to ensure that all necessary actions are taken.
  • Actively engages in and supports the goals and objectives of the RUSD strategic planning process.
  • Acts as a liaison for RUSD with local law enforcement agencies and other outside entities.

Knowledge of:
The core principles of crisis management. Understanding of federal, state, and local safety laws and regulations is required. A strong connection with and engagement in the local community is essential to be effective in this role.

Ability to:
Work flexible hours as needed; respond to a crisis situation and provide direction at a moment’s notice; address the broader community alongside the Chief of Communications when necessary; present necessary information to the BOE;
represent RUSD as it pertains to safety and security matters.
 
Work Environment:
Fast-paced, collaborative, and fluid work environment with multiple needs to be addressed on a daily basis.
 
Physical Demands:
Ability to sit/stand for extended periods; ability to effectively communicate in-person or over the phone; ability to focuson tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy; other demands as needed.
