JOB SUMMARY:
Operates a school bus to transport students to and from school, and to various activities, in a safe and efficient manner.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Transports authorized students according to assigned routes and time schedule.
● Operates multiple routes as determined by the transportation office.
● Utilizes department software/applications for job performance and record keeping.
● Demonstrates the ability to drive with concentration and provide a safe environment for students, including driving in difficult weather conditions and road conditions.
● Transports students and teachers on field trips to various locations as needed.
● Maintains effective student management during the operation of the vehicle and enforces bus rules.
● Manages conflict and uses district established policies regarding student discipline. Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority and completes all required paperwork.
● Works with administrative, staff, parents, and students in a collaborative manner.
● Completes periodic mileage and other reports, including passenger counts.
● Operates a two-way radio and communicates with the transportation office for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers.
● Promptly updates routes and maps and adjust times, as necessary.
● Reports all accidents immediately and completes required accident reports.
● Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.
● Operates a special ramp bus and loads and unloads students in wheelchairs as needed.
● Administers relevant medications as needed in emergency situations
● Assists in the training of bus monitors as needed. Performs a complete pre-trip inspection, monitors vehicle performance and mechanical conditions, and reports any conditions of concern to the Supervisor before transporting students.
● Maintains cleanliness of the bus to ensure safe operating conditions.
● Services the bus with fuel and washes the bus as needed.
● Returns the bus to the assigned lot, performs a final inspection, and secures the bus according to procedures.
● Arranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance (e.g., oil change) and mechanical repairs of the bus.
● Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and keeps emergency exits clear of obstructions.
● Performs periodical safety drills as required by law and completes necessary reports.
● Complies with all federal, state, and local transportation rules, laws, and regulations.
● Participates in all required training and staff meetings.
● Submits required DOT testing when requested.
● Performs all other duties as assigned by Administration.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Must be capable on a continuous basis:
● Sitting for up to a minimum of ninety (90) minutes.
● Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
● Driving a school bus with all abilities to function as a safe driver.
● Must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
● Must be able to communicate orally and hear on a two-way radio while the bus is in motion.
2. Must be capable on a frequent basis:
● Lifting floor to waist fifty (50) pounds, waist to shoulders to forty (40) pounds, and shoulder to overhead to thirty (30) pounds.
● Walking and moving.
● Pushing and pulling fifty (50) pounds from floor to waist, waist to shoulders forty (40) pounds, and shoulders to overhead up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
● Climb stairs (maximum height of 16 inches).
● Twisting head and body to view all areas to safely drive the bus.
● Cervical rotation 180 degrees from left to right and right to left and cervical flexion upward to view mirrors.
● Work in a loud environment.
3. Must be capable on an occasional basis:
● Standing without assistance.
● Physical abilities necessary for assisting any age student in an emergency or practice situations or bus evacuation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
● Class B commercial driver license (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements (district training provided as needed).
● Certification or ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid and maintain the CPR and First Aid certifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● Current CDL.
● Experience working as a bus driver.
● Experience working with students.
● Class B commercial driver license (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements (district training provided as needed).
● Certification or ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid and maintain the CPR and First Aid certifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● Current CDL.
● Experience working as a bus driver.
● Experience working with students.
