Interrelationships: Works closely with Administration, Student Services ,District staff and students.

FLSA Classification: Exempt

 

The Student and Family Engagement Specialist role will support students in their assigned schools. They will focus on direct student support, identity development, and teacher support and coaching in meeting the diverse needs of students impacted by the opportunity gap.

 

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

  1. Develop and Implement Affinity Group Programming and Experiences: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will be responsible for designing, coordinating, and facilitating affinity group programming and experiences tailored to identified students at the secondary level. These affinity groups will serve as safe and supportive spaces for students to explore and celebrate their identities, fostering a sense of belonging and community within the school environment.

  2. Identity Development: The Specialist will create opportunities for students to engage in activities and discussions that promote self-awareness, self-acceptance, and positive identity development. This may include workshops, group discussions, and experiential learning activities that encourage students to explore their cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and other aspects of identity.

  3. Collaboration with Student Services Staff: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will actively collaborate with Student Services staff to empower students, parents/guardians to access school resources for families across all tiers of support. This collaborative effort will ensure a comprehensive and proactive approach to meeting the diverse needs of students and families.

    1. Universal (Tier 1) Support: The Specialist will work closely with Student Services staff to promote universal supports that benefit all students and families within the school community. This may include organizing school-wide events, workshops, and initiatives focused on family engagement, mental health awareness, and academic success. By fostering a culture of inclusion and accessibility, the Specialist will ensure that all families feel welcome and valued at the school.

    2. Targeted (Tier 2) Support: In collaboration with Student Services staff, the Specialist will identify students and families who may benefit from targeted support services due to specific challenges or barriers they face. This could involve providing individualized assistance, referrals to community resources, and advocacy on behalf of students and families. By proactively addressing emerging needs and concerns, the Specialist will help prevent escalation to more intensive interventions.

  4. Provide Leadership and Initiative in Embedding Cultural and Linguistic Relevance: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will take a leadership role in developing tools and strategies to embed cultural and linguistic relevance into all aspects of the school system, including core practices, selection of learning materials, pre-referral processes, and tiered interventions. This proactive approach will ensure that the school environment is inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of students and families.

    1. Contribution to Organizational Learning: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will actively contribute to the organizational learning process by sharing insights, best practices, and lessons learned from their work. This may involve participating in Professional Development opportunities, leading workshops or trainings for staff, and facilitating collaborative reflection and discussion on issues related to cultural and linguistic relevance. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and learning, the Specialist will help foster a more responsive and equitable school community.

  5. Building Relationships and Support for Parents/Guardians: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will prioritize building strong relationships with parents/guardians and providing them with a culturally competent point person for support. Recognizing the importance of cultural competence in fostering meaningful engagement, the Specialist will ensure that parents/guardians have access to a trusted individual who understands their cultural backgrounds, values, and communication preferences.

    1. The Specialist will be readily accessible to parents/guardians to address their questions, concerns, and needs. They will provide personalized assistance, guidance, and advocacy to help parents/guardians navigate school systems, access resources, and participate meaningfully in their child's education. By offering culturally competent support, the Specialist will foster trust and collaboration between families and the school community.

    2. Building Coalitions with Community Partners: Recognizing that family engagement extends beyond the school walls, the Specialist will proactively build coalitions with community partners to benefit all stakeholders. This may involve collaborating with local organizations, cultural centers,  and other community stakeholders to provide resources, services, and opportunities that support families' holistic well-being. 

  6. Co-Construct student experiences and School Day Experiences: The Student and Family Engagement Specialist will lead efforts to co-create clubs and school experiences (this may include field trips) that enrich the overall educational experience for students. This collaborative process will involve working closely with students, educators, and community partners to identify interests, needs, and opportunities for student engagement beyond the classroom.

  7. Attend and participate in district level professional development as well as monthly SAFE meetings.

  8. All other duties as assigned


  1. Education: Bachelor Degree including course work in Education or related to working with students is highly preferred.

  2. Experience: At least four years of experience working in a school setting.  Strong knowledge of Google docs & Microsoft Office Suite.

  3. Knowledge of current research on gaps in student achievement and disproportionality.

  4. Evidence of ability to implement standards- and research-based curriculum and instructional practices in the classroom.

  5. Demonstrated ability of developing and implementing culturally and linguistically responsive instructional strategies. 

  6. Expertise and leadership in multicultural education, teaching for diversity and social justice, or a similar body of practice.

  7. Success working with and mentoring diverse student populations.

Essential Physical / Mental Requirements:


  1. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to 6 hours in an eight-hour day, with or without support.

  2. This position is primarily performed indoors.

  3. Must be able to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance.

  4. Must be able to move throughout the building and from building to building.

  5. Must be able to reach in all directions, use telephone, computer and other office equipment.

  6. Must have dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, printers, etc.

  7. Hearing activity requires the ability to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone.

  8. Must be able to complete job duties in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm.

  9. Must have the ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and attention to detail.
