Administers standard operating procedures within the Transportation Department in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations, including Board Policy and Employee Handbook guidelines. Maintains accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes. Confers regularly with principals and District-level Administrators on adequacy of services, safety, and school bus discipline.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel including daily activities. Meets with drivers prior to the morning departure to discuss and finalize routes. Rides each route at least once per year to observe driver efficiency, safety, student conduct, etc. Monitors radio communication during morning and afternoon route time, ensuring day to day route discrepancies are handled in a professional manner. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Safety: Maintains safety standards in conformance with State and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety. Coordinates all required training for the Bus Drivers and Bus Aides. Ensures that all drivers are properly trained, have all necessary driving licenses, endorsements, physicals, and background checks; maintains and monitors driving records. Acts as liaison with parents and community for complaints and special requests. Discipline: Takes an active role in solving disciplinary problems occurring on school buses. Submits forms written up by bus drivers to the appropriate principal. Investigates requests and complaints relating to transportation, reviews camera cards, and responds or makes recommendations to the School Principal or the Assistant Superintendent for Support Services. Scheduling: Assigns and oversees the input of information to routing, student database, map updates, and route information for all public and nonpublic schools in the District. Reviews all Transportation Requests forms and Contract requests, verifies address and information on Skyward, verifies location and eligibility, determines approval and assigns a bus number with a am/pm time and contacts the legal guardian. Reconfigures all routes so that students will be picked up and dropped off as efficiently as possible, with consideration to time on bus, route mileage, turnarounds, and safety prior to the start of school and release for publication, includes approximate pick-up and drop-off times for each route. Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program, co-curricular activities and summer school programs. Schedules and provides transportation for special school trips that have been approved. Budget: Assists with the transportation budget. Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and District policies. Develops plans for preventive maintenance and long range purchases. Acquires bids on new purchases. Calculates expenses for special school trip requests and submits to the District Office for approval. Reports: Approves and forwards transportation service invoices to Business Manager. Prepares biweekly payroll reports, mileage reports, and monthly fuel reports in a timely manner and submits reports to the Business Manager. Submits all reports required by State authorities. Maintenance: Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distances, and grade levels. Maintains all District owned transportation vehicles and equipment.
