Job Position Statement

The School District of Athens is seeking an individual to support our mission to advance student learning, achievement and success, with primary emphasis on the required custodial and maintenance tasks at Athens Middle and High School.  This position supports the daily operation of the school and contributes to a positive learning environment by taking pride in the cleanliness and care of the facilities.This individual will be motivated, and thrive on creating a climate of inclusion, trust, and productivity. 


Objectives of this Role

  • The school custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment (building and property) for students, staff, families and the community.  

  • Performs routine maintenance in compliance with OSHA, DSPS, DNR, Wisconsin and Marathon County regulations. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain school building and all areas of the facility

  • Clean and sanitize desks, windows, furniture, bathrooms, and other school fixtures

  • Effectively communicate maintenance information, and procedures with school employees

  • Assist in maintaining clean and safe spaces during all seasons (snow, lawn, etc)

  • Repair or replace door hardware, kitchen equipment, outdoor equipment maintenance and seasonal changeover etc.

  • Move furniture, and set up for events within the building or grounds

  • Maintain safety checks on playground equipment, minimal repairs, and roof checks, as needed

  • Will work independently, and be motivated to accomplish daily tasks as assigned by district and school leadership

  • Collect water samples and record results for DNR compliance

  • Support and follow School Board policies and procedures 

  • Other duties as assigned 


Skills and Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures

  • Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, and cleaning solutions

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules

  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work at particular heights

  • Ability to access school roof, and confined spaces

  • Basic electrical and plumbing skills

  • Value relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members 

  • Demonstrate professionalism and confidentiality 

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with keen attention to detail

  • Be an independent problem solver 

  • Demonstrate integrity and good moral character and initiative
