Special education paraprofessionals in elementary schools provide direct academic, behavioral, and personal support to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Reinforce reading, writing, and math concepts taught by the lead teacher through 1-on-1 or small-group instruction. Modify daily learning materials using visual schedules, simplified worksheets, or tactile learning tools. Help students operate assistive technology, speech-generating devices, and communication boards.Implement individual Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and reinforce positive behavior rewards. Apply de-escalation strategies and guide students to sensory breaks during times of emotional distress or sensory overload. Prompt and coach students during peer interactions to build age-appropriate social skills. Assist with personal hygiene tasks, including diapering, toilet training, handwashing, and changing clothes. Support students during lunch and snack times with feeding or physical assistance. Assist with physical mobility, including guiding wheelchairs, supporting physical therapy routines, and navigating hallways. Log daily data on IEP goal progress, behavior incidents, and skill mastery. Share observations with the special education teacher to help adjust interventions and prepare for IEP meetings. Supervise assigned students during non-instructional transitions like recess, lunch, assemblies, arrival, and bus dismissal. Prepare physical learning materials by cutting, laminating, and organizing specialized aids.
