Summary
The Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) plays a vital role in supporting students' communication development by working collaboratively with educators, families, and district specialists. As a key member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, the SLP conducts evaluations, identifies communication disorders, and designs individualized goals and interventions to support student growth. Success in this role depends not only on clinical expertise, but also on building strong, cooperative relationships with building administrators, the Director of Student Services, classroom teachers, parents, and students. Through ongoing communication and shared decision-making, the SLP ensures that each student’s unique needs are met within a supportive, inclusive educational environment.
Some Essential Responsibilities

Assess students’ communication abilities (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice, language) to determine the presence of communication disorders and eligibility for special education services.

Deliver individualized and group instruction aligned with IEP goals and student needs.
Develop lesson plans and implement approved curriculum and intervention strategies. -
Monitor, evaluate, and document student progress using assessments, observations, and performance data.
Maintain a positive, structured therapy environment that supports student learning. -
Collaborate closely with classroom teachers, special education staff, administrators, and families to support student outcomes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong understanding of speech, language, and cognitive-communication development and disorders.

Experience with various Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices (AAC)

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to analyze data, write reports, and develop effective intervention strategies.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a collaborative team.

Proficiency in technology, including virtual meeting platforms, email, and word processing.

Ability to plan and adapt instruction based on individual student needs.

Professionalism, initiative, and sound judgment in a school environment.
Education and/or Experience
-
Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology.
-
A minimum of 60 semester hours in human communication development and clinical techniques.

Minimum of 400 hours of clinical experience, with at least 100 hours in a school setting.

Valid Wisconsin DPI license for Speech and Language Pathology (1820).
