Position Title: Special Education Assistant
Department/Location: Elementary Schools
Job Classification: Educational Assistant (Non-Exempt)
Reports to: Principal
Supervises: N/A
Anticipated Start Date: August 18, 2025
Anticipated Hours: 8 am - 3:30 pm daily
Anticipated Pay Rate: The beginning rate for the special education assignment is as follows:
- With DPI Special Ed Program Aide License $18.69 (individuals in this category will be required to obtain a special education certification and may apply for reimburse of the license fee of $100 after completing 90 days of employment)
- With DPI Teacher or Specialty License/Certification $20.72
The Wauwatosa School District (WSD) is seeking candidates interested in serving as a Special Educational Assistant in the elementary schools in the Wauwatosa School District. At the time of this vacancy, WSD is seeking 3 special education assistants. Candidates should notify the hiring manager/princpal if they are interested in working at a specific school.
The Special Education Assistant works with students under the supervision of certified teachers to support and services students with intellectual disabilities throughout the school day. Duties include providing academic instruction, behavioral supports, supervision, daily living and delegated nursing tasks to students with disabilities.

Qualifications:
High school diploma
Certification or the ability to gain certification as a special education aide through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
Teaching certification through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (preferred)
Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and give oral and written instructions
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Excellent communication skills
Experience with the needs of a diverse student population (preferred)
Experience working with students with disabilities (preferred)
Academic support experience in the classroom (preferred)
Essential Job Functions:
Provides support and delivers services to students with disabilities throughout the school day to ensure academic growth, positive social engagement, and access to the school environment
Assists students with academic work in general education classrooms and small group settings
Under the supervision of assigned teacher, implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts
Provides physical assistance to students with mobility challenges
Works collaboratively with special education team
Delivers direct instructional services, academic supports, and behavioral supports described in IEP’s of students with disabilities
Assists classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to support academic and social success of students
Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce academic and behavioral goals
Supports an inclusive educational environment for all students
Assists special education students requiring daily care (e.g., toileting, diapering, feeding, delegated nursing tasks, etc.)
Assists with hands-on medical routines (clean intermittent catheterizations, ostomy maintenance, diabetic care including injecting insulin, and administering g-tube feeds)
Monitors students within a variety of school environments (e.g., cafeteria, bus stop, classroom, restroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment
Serves as role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
Complies with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
Performs other duties as may be assigned
Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to thirty pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
Ability to get down on and up off of the floor independently
Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
