The Berlin Area School District is searching for a passionate and talented full-time Cross-Categorical Special Education Teacher for grades 6-8.  Under the direction of the building administration and the Director of Special Education, the special education teacher provides prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students with disabilities. These services are designed to increase student access, engagement, and progress in the general education classroom. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching students within an inclusive environment.

Berlin Middle School is a community of 275 students that engages all learners with caring adults and offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to explore their interests and strengths.  We focus on the whole child in academics so students are highly supported in the core academic areas, while allowing them to explore various electives from art, music, foreign language, physical education and health, and Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  We focus on the social-emotional development of adolescents and skills that will make them ready for their futures beyond the Berlin Area School District.

Berlin Middle School is one of three schools that make up the Berlin Area School District. Clay Lamberton Elementary (4K-5) and Berlin High School (9-12) sit on the same campus as Berlin High School and serve as a hub of activity for the greater Berlin community. The Berlin Area School District is composed of 14 municipalities, with the City of Berlin at the center.  Berlin is a rural community with a population of 5,500 located approximately 20 minutes west of Oshkosh and 10 minutes north of Green Lake. The Fox River runs through the center of the historic Victorian downtown. Agriculture, health services, education, light industry and retail shops comprise Berlin’s economy.

The ideal candidate for this position must be able to demonstrate knowledge and effectiveness in the following areas:

  • adhering to legal confidentiality requirements;
  • understanding of the evaluation and IEP process, including monitoring of timelines;
  • utilizing a strengths-based mindset that fosters the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP);
  • developing high-quality materials, evidence-based, and data-driven instructional strategies for academic, life, and social skills;
  • establishing positive relationships with students and responding to maladaptive behavior using approved methods;
  • coordinating the implementation of accommodations in student IEPs;
  • implementing behavior management systems, including conducting functional behavioral assessment and the development of behavior intervention plans;
  • engaging in collaboration with school and community team members to proactively meet the academic and functional needs of students.
Salary, benefits, and length of contract:  This position works a 190-day contract with a salary not less than $46,893 and an excellent benefits package.
