Position Overview:
The school district of Altoona is currently accepting applications for a part-time Special Education Paraprofessional in grades 6-8 at Altoona Middle School with a start date of August 25, 2025. This part-time position would take place from approximately 8:20am-1:50pm, but exact start and end times may vary based on the needs of our students. Applicants should be strong at creating and fostering positive relationships with all students. The Special Education Paraprofessional assists teachers in the delivery of educational and behavioral interventions; also assists students who receive special education services in general education classrooms with the goal of helping students to reach their goals. Due to the varied and individual needs of each student, Special Education Paraprofessional may provide a variety of support and assistance, and should be flexible to the needs of our students. The candidate must also have the ability to communicate effectively, professionally, and confidentially with parents, colleagues, and students.
AMS has a Schoolwide Title Program. In order to meet ESEA requirements, paraprofessional staff are required to have either an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree, 48 credits of post-secondary, or pass an assessment to align with these requirements. Upon hire, our district is fully committed to supporting you in meeting these requirements, as applicable.
As a paraprofessional at AMS, you would be a part of a team of paraprofessionals as well as Special Education Teachers who work and plan collectively to help meet the needs of all students. In this role, you would primarily be supporting students in the general education classrooms working with classroom teachers, but at times may be sporting students in smaller settings.
Building Information:
Altoona Middle School is a grades 6-8 school with about 400 students using a true middle school philosophy and approach. We are a part of a grades 4-12 campus allowing us to share staff and resources making it very common to see students in any of these grades every day. Our students enjoy 80-minute math, ELA, and Science or Social Studies classes, along with two 45-minute class periods with a variety of Specials classes, as well as a homeroom/intervention period every day. Our location between two larger school districts provides our staff, students, and families with more resources than most schools our size. As a building and district, we implement all aspects of a Professional Learning Community in our pursuit of student success. While we still consider ourselves a smaller school, we provide “larger school opportunities” where both families and educators choose to make Altoona Middle School their school of choice. We have amazing students, supportive parents and community, and an absolutely fantastic staff who work as a family doing what it takes for all students. We are excited in your interest to be a part of our AMS family and help us continue to grow in our pursuit to make all of our students tomorrow ready citizens!
