The Baldwin-Woodville Area School District serves a population of more than 1,700 students. The Baldwin-Woodville Area School District is fortunate to have two supportive communities. Baldwin and Woodville are in St. Croix County, which is in northwestern Wisconsin; the communities are located 30 minutes east of St. Paul, MN and 40 miles west of Eau Claire, WI. St. Croix county is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Wisconsin. BWSD is currently looking for a Bus Garage and Routing Manager.
The School Bus Garage & Routing Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and repair of the school district’s transportation fleet, as well as developing and managing efficient bus routes. This role ensures that all school vehicles are safe, compliant, and available as needed, while also planning and adjusting routes to meet student transportation needs. The manager supervises garage staff, coordinates vehicle servicing, and uses routing software to optimize transportation logistics.
Fleet includes 22 buses and 6 school vans.
Key Responsibilities:
Fleet & Maintenance Management:
- Oversee maintenance, inspections, and repairs for all district vehicles.
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, etc.).
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance logs and service records.
- Schedule preventive maintenance and ensure timely repairs to minimize downtime.
Routing & Scheduling:
- Develop, implement, and maintain efficient and safe bus routes using routing software.
- Regularly review routes for efficiency, fuel economy, and changing student populations.
- Coordinate daily and special event transportation schedules with school administrators.
- Respond promptly to route changes, delays, and emergencies.
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with drivers, parents, and school staff.
Staff Supervision:
- Supervise, schedule, and support garage staff, including mechanics and drivers.
- Assign tasks and monitor work quality and performance.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities for staff.
- Address performance issues and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Inventory & Procurement:
- Manage inventory of parts, tools, and supplies; order as needed within budget.
- Track expenses and assist in budget preparation for fleet operations.
Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure vehicles and transportation operations comply with applicable laws and policies.
- Conduct vehicle safety inspections and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Promote and enforce safety procedures and regulations in the garage and on routes.
Administrative & Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of vehicle maintenance, routing changes, fuel usage, and operational costs.
- Prepare and submit reports to school leadership as required.
- Assist in the development and management of transportation budgets
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree or technical certification preferred)
- 3–5 years of experience in vehicle maintenance or transportation management, with supervisory responsibilities
- Experience with school bus routing software (e.g., Transfinder, VersaTrans, BusPlanner) preferred
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements preferred or willing to obtain
- Strong knowledge of diesel mechanics, vehicle diagnostics, and fleet management
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt to changing schedules and route demands
Working Conditions:
- Work performed in both office and garage environments
- Requires occasional physical labor and operation of equipment
- May include early morning, evening, or emergency hours
- Regular use of computer systems for routing, maintenance tracking, and communication
