Position Details
The Berlin Area School District (BASD) is searching for a motivated and reliable full-time Lead Custodian. The Lead Custodian, under general supervision and acting in a lead capacity, assists, trains, and directs the work of custodians assigned to the various BASD buildings. This position ensures that all buildings and grounds remain in a clean, orderly condition and assists with planning for school and recreational activities. This position works closely with their staff and contracted employees to solve issues to ensure efficient and safe operations in assigned areas as well as responds to emergency calls for service.
This position will have the following responsibilities, tasks and duties:
- Direct and supervise the day-to-day work of any assigned custodial staff and/or contracted service.
- Plan, prioritize, communicate and monitor the work of the custodial team based upon specific building activities and needs on a daily basis aligned to timely pre-determined District standards.
- Participate in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school district by performing any task or activity described in the “custodian” job description. Does all phases of cleaning, using equipment and techniques as required by the Director of Operations. Cleaning consists of all functions necessary to maintain building in first-class condition of cleanliness, including sweeping, dusting, washing, waxing, polishing, vacuuming, shampooing, etc., utilizing appropriate machines or hand techniques.
- Maintain high standard of cleanliness throughout the district's buildings.
- Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making such minor repairs as he/she is capable of, and reporting major repairs needed or safety concerns promptly to the Director of Operations.
- Solve custodial issues with school staff.
- Cover for the Director of Operations as needed.
- Check and secure the building at the end of the shifts.
- Provide guidance and training to custodial staff regarding day-to-day tasks and administer continuous improvement education to all custodial staff.
- Monitor the time records of all custodial staff in the school during their shift and certify them for payment.
- Provide feedback to the Director of Operations regarding area inspections and custodian staff performance.
- Assist in complying with codes and regulations to provide safe and healthy facilities.
- Provide necessary care and management of school property, including money, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Clay Lamberton Elementary (4K-5), Berlin Middle School (6-8), and Berlin High School (9-12) sit on the same campus and serve as a hub of activity for the greater Berlin community. The Berlin Area School District is composed of 14 municipalities, with the City of Berlin at the center. Berlin is a rural community with a population of 5,500 located approximately 20 minutes west of Oshkosh and 10 minutes north of Green Lake. The Fox River runs through the center of the historic Victorian downtown. Agriculture, health services, light industry and retail shops comprise Berlin’s economy.
Salary, benefits, and length of contract: This position works 260 days year-round, 40 hours per week, 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. with an hourly wage between $22.00 and $27.00 per hour, depending on experience. The position also offers an excellent benefits package.

- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Associate’s degree in related field (preferred).
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

- Experience related to working with minimal supervision, being a self-starter, and taking initiative.
- Skill in leading and directing others working as custodial staff.
- Skill and demonstrated success in managing multiple priorities in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated skill in organizing ideas and presenting them with clarity and conciseness, in establishing and maintaining working relationships based on mutual confidence and respect, in effective leadership of others and in identifying problems and their resolutions.
- Experience training, coaching, and providing input to the evaluation of staff on custodian techniques and proper procedures.
- Ability to motivate and encourage staff to complete assignments timely and accurately.
- Demonstrated willingness to fill in for a custodial position.
- Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner with all stakeholders using oral, written, and electronic means.
- Three years experience in methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning operations (preferred).
- Three years experience leading a group of individuals in the workplace or any other related program, event, or activity (preferred).
