JOB SUMMARY:

The Dean of Students is responsible for attendance, discipline, safety, and related student services and performs the duties within the authority and responsibility delegated by the Principal.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Protects the health and welfare of students.

a.       Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct.

b.      Coordinates with Administration to ensure coverage at all school events when necessary.

c.       Confers with students and parents on security matters.

d.      Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control and security.

e.       Assists in the monitoring, inspection and supervision of school facilities and patrols buildings and grounds for security concerns.

f.        Assists in the maintenance of the crisis management plan and school safety requirements.

g.      Assists in the planning and implementation of the school’s emergency preparedness program.

h.      Performs supervision of students during unstructured times such as before and after school, during passing times and during lunch periods.

2.  Investigates and resolves all student discipline problems in a fair and just manner.

a.       Investigates student complaints and grievances.

b.      Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations.

c.       Investigates, adjudicates, and monitors minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, and in-school suspension.

d.      Suspends students from school in accordance with Board policy and state law.

e.       Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law, and best practices.

f.        Presents the school’s case in due process proceedings for suspension and expulsion.

g.      Compiles, analyzes, and shares student discipline data, and uses that data to make decisions.

h.      Plans and implements preventive disciplinary measures through changes in programming, counseling, home visits, schedule changes, behavioral plans, etc.

i.        Addresses bus behavior referrals and maintains appropriate documentation.

3.  Oversees all matters of student attendance.

a.       Communicates with parents, teachers, and Student Services teams on student attendance.

b.      Investigates student attendance issues and assigns students appropriate consequences for truancy.

c.       Decides if absences are excusable under state law and board policy.

d.      Advises students and parents on ways to improve attendance.

e.       Supports programming to reduce suspension rates and provide alternatives to suspension.

f.        Oversees student attendance record to ensure all absences are adjudicated.

g.      Manages and enforces school behavioral expectations, including attendance and classroom alignment with school-wide goals.

4.  Counsels individual students and, when necessary, works with Student Services teams to make appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, or psychological counseling.

a.       Provides input as needed for student placement and evaluation.

b.      Makes referrals to other professional staff members in the District.

c.       Advises on modification of program to meet individual student needs.

d.      Works with Student Services to develop proactive disciplinary interventions.

e.       Assists new students with transitioning to school.

f.        Creates and coordinates education alternatives for students in need.

5.  Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of and assists in the interpretation of programs, policies and procedures affecting students’ lives in school.

a.       Confers with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, Administration, and students on matters of discipline and welfare and student related policies.

b.      Acts upon own discretion in matters not covered by Board Policy.

c.       Implements and enforces Board Policies and develops policy recommendations for the Board’s consideration and action.

d.      Makes recommendations concerning the revision and updating of student code of conduct,

e.       rules, regulations, and handbooks.

f.        Prepares administrative reports.

g.      Assists staff with the creation and alignment of classroom student behavioral expectations and classroom management plans.

h.      Serves as a resource to staff regarding student management issues.

i.        Collaborates with staff, administrators, and parents through the response to intervention process.

j.        Collaborates with the school counselor and personnel to create and maintain research-based behavioral interventions and trains faculty and staff in those interventions.

k.      Manages the documentation of student behavior through the student management system.

l.        Attends appropriate meetings regarding student growth and success (IEP and 504 case conferences, parent meetings, expulsion hearings, etc.).

m.    Shares responsibilities of organizing and supervising all major events and programs with Administration.

n.      Assists in the implementation and plan for proper conduct of participants and spectators at all public events.

o.      Serves as an instructional resource for intervention and equity services to support the development and growth of equitable systems and practices within the school.

6.  Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law

     enforcement agencies and the judicial systems.

a.       Works with community and government agencies on problems relating to drug abuse and truancy.

b.      Works cooperatively with local police agencies and the School Liaison Officers on security matters.

c.       Serves as liaison between school and juvenile court.

d.      Represents the school system at community meetings and conferences.

e.       Reports illegal acts to the proper authorities.

f.        Coordinates with outside organizations and agencies.

7.      7.  Serves as a member of the school leadership team.

a.       Purchases, under approved procedures, items of supply and equipment necessary for the operation of the school system.

b.      Works with the Assistant Principals to plan and coordinate work of assigned staff members.

c.       Assists with evaluation of departmental Support Staff.

d.      Serves as an emergency substitute teacher when need arises.

8. 8.  Performs all other duties as assigned by the administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·   Current licensure through the WI Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

·   At least three (3) years of teaching or counseling experience within an educational setting.

·    Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·   Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field.

·   Experience implementing successful student behavior management strategies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

1.      Capable on a continuous basis of standing, sitting, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, twisting; repetitive movement of both hands and feet; seeing with both near and far visual acuity and to hear.

2.      Capable on a frequent basis of walking and moving, climbing stairs, lifting from floor to waist (up to #50), waist to shoulders (up to #25).

3.      Capable on an occasional basis of pushing; pulling; lifting from shoulders to overhead (up to #10).
