The School District of Onalaska is accepting applications for a 1.0 FTE Elementary Alternative Education-Special Education Teacher beginning the 2025-26 school year.

Position Summary:
To provide grade level aligned curriculum, special education services and social-emotional-behavioral instruction in a self-contained program to elementary age students identified with significant behavioral disabilities; case manage and implement IEPs; and meet the individual needs of identified students.

Qualifications:
  1. Possess a valid Wisconsin Teaching License in the assigned area.  (Special Education - Cross Categorical #801/1801 and/or Emotional Behavioral Disability #830/1830)

  2. Additional license in Alternative Education (#1952) or Regular Education (#777/1777) preferred

  3. Prior teaching experience with students with significant special education needs in the area of Emotional Behavioral Disabilities preferred

  4. Desire to work with students with complex needs within a setting that is personalized to meet the needs of each individual student 

  5. Must be knowledgeable in state standards and be able to modify and adapt the curriculum to meet the individual student learning needs.

  6. Strong communication skills with families, staff and administrators


Specific Assignment Responsibilities:

Certified Staff are required to assume an obligation for all teaching functions related to a quality educational program as listed on the full job description and include the the following responsibiltlies for the specific assignment:

  1. Plans for, coordinates and leads the instructional day for identified students and serves as their case manager for their individualized educational plans (IEP).  

  1. Provides individualized and small group instruction in alignment with grade level standards and  specially designed instruction based upon the IEP needs of each student.  

  1. Develops, implements and revises the Individual Educational Plans and Behavior Intervention Plans for identified students as needed.

  1. Creates and fosters a welcoming and safe learning environment.

  1. Collaborates with others to identify and address academic, behavioral and/or health problems.

  1. Coordinates social/emotional learning and behavioral instruction, intervention and support for identified students which includes:

    • Providing direct instruction and progress monitoring in alignment with student specific needs 

    • Creating responsive schedules for identified students 

    • Providing academic instruction in collaboration with classroom teachers

    • Providing instruction and support to students across environments

  1. Creates and coordinates support staff assignments and schedules.

  1. Provides consultation to teachers and serves as a resource to families.

  1. Administers state and district standardized tests in accordance with district testing protocols. Coordinates and provides necessary accommodations to students for required district and state assessments. 

  1. Maintains confidentiality related to student information.

  1. Monitors student academic and behavioral growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports as necessary.

  1. Maintains regular communication between home and school and with any community partners. 

  1. Maintains ongoing collaborative relationships with administrators, other building special education teachers, related service providers, school counselors, social workers, school psychologists and other teaching staff.

  1. Serves as a team member on IEP teams for special education referrals, evaluations and placements. 

  1. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and by self-selected professional growth activities. Attends and participates in local, regional and state meetings and workshops focused on improving student outcomes.

  1. Maintains all required records and submits reports to the Director of Student Services.

  1. Stays current in nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation training.

  1. Completes other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.
