JOB SUMMARY:  

The Custodian plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the Germantown High School campus. The Custodian applies cleaning practices and procedures within the designated location(s), assists in athletic and activity set-ups and/or take-downs, operates custodial and maintenance equipment, and executes cleaning duties and facility maintenance requests as assigned, in order to help and support the Germantown School District in providing students and staff with safe, clean, and functional facilities.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certifications in custodial management
and pool operations, preferred.
2. Proven experience in custodial work, with a solid understanding of cleaning techniques,
equipment operation, and safety protocols.
3. Ability to logistically multi-task as it pertains to event set ups, sporting events, and daily duties.
4. Ability to read and interpret installation/assembly manuals and schematics.
5. Ability to work effectively as a team member.
6. Act as a representative of the school district and work politely and tactfully with the public,
community groups, students, parents, and other employees.
7. Possess strong organizational abilities. Including effective time management, task prioritization,
and adaptability in a fast-paced setting.
8. Thorough knowledge of the safe and effective use of hand and power tools and other
equipment of the mechanical trades.
9. Ability to learn District and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
10. Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, and make independent
decisions.
11. Ability to communicate in a positive, clear, and concise manner with staff, coaches, and the
general public.
12. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills - Ability to add, subtract, and multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using
whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Physical Demands - The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and
fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is
required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee
frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee
continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently
bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this
job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally the employee will lift
and/or move up to 90 pounds. The employee will frequently push/pull items and equipment.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works both indoors and outdoors. The
employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work
with toxic or caustic chemicals such as pesticides, petroleum products, degreasers, and other
sprays. Frequently, the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.
 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES/LICENSES:
Required:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid driver's license with good driving record.
3. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
4. One to three years of custodial operation(s) experience.
Desired:
1. Excellent communications skills both written and verbal.
2. Experience in a school district setting is highly desirable
3. Working knowledge of all physical plant operations
4. Certified Pool Operator, Boiler Operator License, Certified Custodial Technician (CCT), Athletic Field Management license/certification.
