JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, teaches one or more classes in the field of music to students in grades K through 5, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Educates students about the fundamental concepts of music theory such as rhythm, melody, pitch and tempo while utilizing course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum. Facilitates vocalizing, harmonizing, singing and playing classroom musical instruments.

  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively instruct and assess students as per the standards outlined on the District’s supervision and evaluation form and/or other alternative supervision and evaluation methods.(attached)

  • Understands and maintains consistent progress toward meeting competency levels of Wisconsin’s 10 Teaching Standards.(attached).  

  • Develops and refines music curriculum based on the Wisconsin State Standards of create, perform, respond and connect.

  • Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time. 

  • Provides individual, small group, and large group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly, productive environment during class time, group rehearsals and music performances.

  • Instructs students in proper care and use of instruments and equipment and organizes storage areas and control use of materials and instruments to prevent loss or abuse. 

  • Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding; and prepares progress reports. 

  • Selects and requisitions appropriate music, books, instructional aides and instruments to enhance learning and maintains inventory reports.

  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. 

  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which she/he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines. 

  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress. 

  • Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities. 

  • Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

  • Maintains the District’s standards relative to the confidentiality of information about students and school related concerns.

  • Attends to the safety and well being of all students, including but not limited to, the use of universal precautions as per blood borne pathogens training.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

CREDENTIALS:


Valid Wisconsin license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned. Background with Music is preferred.


EDUCATION:


Bachelor's degree including all courses to meet credential requirements.


EXPERIENCE:


Student teaching, internship, or full-time teaching experience.


PERSONAL QUALITIES:


Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. Recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have observed the characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher that meet District’s standards for hiring.


REASONING ABILITY:


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
