JOB TITLE: High School Counselor


CLASSIFICATION:  Professional Staff


JOB OBJECTIVE: The school counselor is responsible for developing a competitive school counseling program that promotes success for all students. They will promote equitable access to opportunities and rigorous learning opportunities for all students. The school counselor will collaborate with parents, teachers, community organizations, and other stakeholders in support of all students.



REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Wisconsin School Counseling license is preferred

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited university

  • Experience with at-risk youth

  • Experience working with families who are emergent bilingual

  • Ability and desire to connect classroom learning to the community and family

  • Display a positive, professional and proactive attitude in working with colleagues and supervisors


PRIMARY DUTIES:


  • Advises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, career and short-term social and emotional problems.

  • Remains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible through individual sessions and group class meetings.

  • Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic matters.

  • Teaches guidance classes and provides guidance counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational, social, and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents.

  • Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters including academic modifications and/or accommodations.

  • Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities.

  • Participates on a Student Services Team, identifies students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with behavioral health specialists.

  • Develops individual plans based on student's needs to promote academic and social emotional success and collaborations with Administrators, Teachers, and Staff to execute the plans.

  • Assists students, parents, and staff in understanding school and counseling department policies and procedures.

  • Provides brief counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists.

  • Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports.

  • Provides support to Administrators, Teachers, and Staff regarding student social/emotional concerns.

  • Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.

  • Manages 504 plans within the High School.

  • Collaborates with Administrators to develop interventions based on principles of restorative justice to help mitigate incidents of bullying/harassment/discrimination.

  • Creates, executes, and monitors implementation of strategy for distance learning across the Platteville School District. The strategy should include a variety of instructional models to deliver course content to students.

  • Monitors enrollment and re-enrollment processes, student progress, pacing, and completion rates, ensuring that targets are met.

  • Analyzes and takes appropriate action on student performance data from in building and distance learning programs used.

  • Prepares and submits enrollment and attendance reports as mandated by the State.

  • Communicates with parents about student engagement, commitment, and concerns.

  • Networks with local educational partners and organizations to maintain a current understanding of appropriate post-secondary advisement.

  • Promotes and supports professional development through training, in-service, and other development.

  • Attends training sessions and conferences to keep abreast of current practices and legal issues.

  • Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of all distance and virtual instructional programs, including the use of technology.

  • Assistance with developing master schedule and providing student-level scheduling support

  • Other duties as assigned
