Summary: The Principal serves as the primary leader in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the school, ensuring a safe, effective, and inclusive learning environment where students and staff can excel. This role provides leadership in the development, implementation, and management of school-wide programs, including student behavior management, while fostering strong relationships among staff, students, families, and community partners. The Principal is responsible for supervising and evaluating staff, coordinating schedules, and ensuring high-quality teaching and learning through professional development, support of curriculum and educational programs, and the Educator Effectiveness process.
Personnel: As the Principal, you will be responsible for staff supervision. This includes supervising and evaluating the performance of teaching staff, lunch/recess supervisors, an administrative assistant, and substitute teachers. The position ensures high-quality teaching and instructional delivery of academic standards through collaboration with the Director of Instruction and the Educator Effectiveness process. It also supports a rigorous academic experience by providing observation, feedback, data-driven instruction, and professional development. You will play an integral role in securing substitute coverage and creating school-wide classroom schedules.
Administrative Leadership: As the Principal, you will be leading the coordination, development, and management of the school-wide behavioral management and discipline program. You will be addressing and resolving student behavior concerns, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with instructional staff to implement school-wide behavior management strategies. You’ll oversee student attendance, including addressing chronic issues, and work with parents and staff on academic, behavior, and attendance matters.
In this role, you will support the administrative guidelines for educational programs, policies, and operations, as well as emergency planning and drills for fire, tornado, and lockdown situations. The position also collaborates with the student transportation provider to enforce behavioral expectations and manages student arrival and departure to ensure safety and minimize confusion.
The position collects data for continuous school improvement and assists with the oversight of extracurricular programs. Additionally, the role includes attending Board meetings, ensuring compliance with state laws regarding child abuse and neglect, maintaining required licenses/certifications, and managing the department's budget. Other duties are assigned by the School Administrator.
Community Relations: The Principal effectively communicates with staff, students, families, and community members while fostering and maintaining school-community partnerships. It includes attending and facilitating school and community events to promote collaboration, coordinating the alumni volunteer program with the Transition Coordinator, and actively participating in learning about American Indian culture, language, traditions, and the Seven Sacred Gifts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a Master’s degree in a field of Education required.
Wisconsin DPI License in Administrator required.
Principal license (5051) required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum of five years previous teaching experience required.
Minimum of three years administrative experience preferred.
Experience with education in an urban setting is preferred.
Supervisory and management experience preferred.
Knowledge of and/or experience working with American Indian cultures, communities, and students preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Most work is performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment. Noise levels may reach high volumes at times. Some work may be performed outside in weather and at various field trip locations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
POSITION TYPE
Full time School Year (215 days) position. Regular attendance is essential to succeed in this role.
