LOCATION: East Central Wisconsin. Sixty miles north of Milwaukee on Highway 41. Easy driving distance to Appleton, Oshkosh, Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Marian University (four years) located in Fond du Lac. City population and surrounding area which constitutes the school district, approximately 45,000.

 

SCHOOLS: 14 schools – one high school, grades 9-12 with an alternative high school option; three middle schools, grades 6-8; nine elementary schools, grades 4K-5; and one STEM charter school serving grades 6 - 12.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 


 


POSITION TITLE: Substitute Special Education Instructional Assistant


REPORTS TO: Director of Human Resources


COORDINATES WITH: HR Substitute Coordinator, Building Principals, teaching staff


QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma

WI DPI Special Education Program Aide License

Experience working with students or children in school-based or other 

settings

Experience working with special needs populations (preferred)


COMPENSATION SCHEDULE: Substitute Instructional Assistant


EMPLOYMENT TERM: Temporary


WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS: 8 hours daily by location schedule


*EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT STATUS: Non-exempt


 


 

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES

The substitute Special Education instructional aide fills in on a temporary basis for absent staff, allowing the educational program to continue uninterrupted for students.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and give oral and written instructions

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Assists teachers in planning and implementation of learning experiences for students

  • Assists in  instruction of students in group or one-on-one settings, often without direct teacher supervision

  • Assists teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students and of their needs, interests, and abilities

  • Assists in monitoring classroom management in accordance with the District’s discipline procedures

  • Supervises students inside and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment

  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills and assemblies

  • Alerts teacher to any problem or special information about individual students

  • Confers with teacher to provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities

  • Assists students who may exhibit aggressive behavior

  • Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual values and environments

  • Holds expectations for high performance of self and students

  • Maintains accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and District policy and regulations

  • Performs various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitors assignments, maintains accurate files, and performs other related functions

  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff

  • Demonstrates computer literacy and operates software programs as related to job responsibilities

  • Provides information and assistance to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of regular teacher 

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight­-hour day

  • Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to thirty pounds without assistance in an indoor setting

  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance

  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building

  • Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.

  • Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone

  • Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm

  • Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

  • Remain free of any alcohol or illegal substance in the workplace in compliance with Policy 3122.01 / 4122.01 throughout their employment in the District.

  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities necessary within the scope of this employment position as assigned by the Superintendent or designee. 


*No overtime eligible employee  may perform overtime work for the District without prior supervisory approval. No non-exempt employee may perform work for the District outside of his/her regular schedule without prior supervisory approval. Violations of this requirement will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination from employment.
