Notre Dame School of Milwaukee (NDSM) is a Catholic School founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Milwaukee, WI.  The school was founded in 1996 as Notre Dame Middle School, an all girls 5th-8th grade middle school to serve Latinas on the southside of Milwaukee. Today Notre Dame School of Milwaukee is a Grade K3-8 Catholic school sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. It has a co-education primary school serving boys and girls in a Spanish and English dual language model.  NDSM addresses the urgent, critical needs of the community through student-focused education.  We currently serve over 690 students across three campuses and we have both an all-boys and all-girls middle school, a co-ed primary school, and an Early Childhood Education program.  To learn more please visit our website at www.notredamemke.org.

Education/Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university

  • School counselor certification

  • Prefer English/Spanish bilingual but not required

  • Masters degree preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Commitment to Catholic Education and Gospel values

  • First point of contact for mental health needs/crisis

  • Provide timely individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.

  • Collaborate with the special education teacher(s) to ensure students with special needs in the areas of social-emotional or mental health concerns are addressed.

  • Select, implement and provide training on a high quality social emotional learning/character curriculum approved by administration. 

  • Teach social-emotional classes to all grade levels as directed by school administrators.

  • Implement an effective program of career planning.

  • Lead, coordinate and implement RedGen curriculum and activities.

  • Lead Student Council and activities associated with the group.

  • Obtain advance approval from the principals/directors for all activities and expenditures.

  • Support, track, report and hold parent meetings regarding attendance and truancy.

  • Provide training to all staff on an annual basis on Mandatory Reporting. 

  • Report any signs of suspected abuse/neglect immediately and communicate/provide documentation to the appropriate director.

  • Utilize data from behavior detention to implement and monitor behavior trackers. The counselor will connect the student with an appropriate check-in/check-out mentor and ensure the procedure is being done with fidelity. The counselor will provide parents/guardians with a referral to outside support if growth is not evident with use of the tracker.

  • Support teachers in integrating appropriate sensory/movement support and behavior accommodations.

  • Provide guidance and professional development to staff on self-care.

  • Organize, implement, and document safe environment curriculum (Circle of Grace)

  • Plan Upstander Week and other activities to encourage social emotional health

  • Plan “Moving Up Day” and transition activities for fourth grade students in May.

  • Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, mass, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, graduation, and open house.

  • Other duties as assigned by the principals/directors or other administrative staff.


Record Keeping Duties:


  • Maintains accurate and confidential student records and reports


Meetings and Organizations:


  • Attends all faculty and in‐service meetings, and other meetings as needed

  • Actively engages in professional development

  • Participates and meets the requirements of Sustaining the Mission and maintains the appropriate level of certification.

  • Meet professional counselor requirements of the school district and state.

  • Must possess the proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.

  • Must possess knowledge and experience with cultural sensitivity and awareness.

  • Ability to be flexible, resilient, and adaptable to changing priorities, with a willingness to put students first at all times. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
