Job Goal:
The District School Nurse is responsible for the implementation of school health services for the district within the division of student services. Roles of the School Nurse are as follows:
  • Providing direct care to students and staff;
  • Providing leadership for the provision of health services;
  • Providing screening and referral for health conditions;
  • Promoting a healthy school environment;
  • Promoting health;
  • Serving in a leadership role for health policies and programs; and
  • Serving as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers.
 
Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing from National League for Nursing accredited school.
  • Valid license to practice as registered professional nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
  • Valid driver’s license at time of employment and availability of a properly insured personal automobile for use on the job.
  • Maintain current CPR/AED and first aid certification.
  • School Nursing experience preferred (but not required).
  • National School Nurse Certification preferred (but not required).
  • Master’s degree in nursing or related health field preferred (but not required).
  • Pediatric nursing experience preferred (but not required).
 
Reports to: 
Director of Student Services
 
 
Job Responsibilities:
  1. Recommend school district policies and philosophy related to the Health Services Program.
  2. Provide supervision of building level health aides (5 buildings).
  3. Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of school children.
  4. Promote and maintain health and well-being of students, families, and school personnel by teaching and counseling.
  5. Develop, implement and/or oversee an individual plan for the care of students with chronic health conditions or disabilities and students needing treatments or medication.
  6. Prevent communicable disease.
  7. Develop and maintain a system of first aid, recommend school safety measures, and promote a healthful school environment.
  8. Provide health education.
  9. Assume responsibility for continuing education and own professional development.
  10. Collect data and maintain records within professional and legal boundaries and school guidelines.
  11. Perform such other duties as may be directed.

Physical Requirements:

This work regularly requires sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing and occasionally requires  pushing, pulling, lifting, and operating machines; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and observing general surroundings and activities; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. school offices/classrooms/passageways).
