Job Summary:

The Self-Contained Special Education Aide provides support to the special education teacher and assists in delivering individualized instruction and care to students with significant disabilities in a self-contained classroom. This role focuses on fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that meets each student’s unique needs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Support:

Assist the teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students, ensuring compliance with all outlined accommodations and modifications.

Provide one-on-one or small-group support to reinforce academic lessons, life skills, and behavioral interventions.

Use adaptive technology and assistive devices to aid student learning and communication.

Prepare and organize instructional materials under the teacher’s guidance.

Classroom Management:

Supervise students during classroom activities, ensuring safety and engagement.

Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as directed, using positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies.

Assist in managing transitions, routines, and schedules for students, maintaining a structured environment.

Personal Care Support:

Provide personal care assistance as needed, including feeding, toileting, and mobility support.

Monitor students’ physical and emotional well-being and report concerns to the teacher or designated staff.

Communication and Collaboration:

Communicate effectively with the special education teacher and related service providers about student progress and concerns.

Collaborate with team members, including therapists, counselors, and parents, to support student goals.

Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policies.

Administrative Duties:

Record data on student performance and behaviors as part of progress monitoring.

Assist with classroom organization, including setting up materials and cleaning up after activities.

Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as required.

 

Skills and Abilities:

Patience, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with students with diverse needs.

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Knowledge of basic instructional techniques and behavior management strategies.

Physical ability to assist with lifting, transferring, or supporting students as needed.

Certifications:

Special Education Aide License(if required by the state or district).

CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Work Environment:

The role may involve standing, walking, bending, lifting, and other physical activities.

The aide may encounter challenging behaviors and must be prepared to respond calmly and professionally.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred.

Experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, in an educational or care setting is highly desirable.
