JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The School Counselor provides comprehensive trauma-informed services to K-12 students who experience significant challenges, including trauma, mental health conditions, emotional/behavioral disabilities, neurological difference, and/or at-risk behaviors. The Counselor supports students in achieving success academically, socially, and emotionally, and in planning for their futures. Core responsibilities include:

  • Individual Counseling: Provides one-on-one counseling for students whose behavioral, emotional, social, or academic progress indicates the need for intervention, with a focus on trauma recovery and mental health support.
  • Group Counseling: Facilitates small group sessions aimed at promoting students' social development, emotional regulation, and coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Academic and Career Planning: Supports students in setting and achieving academic goals, identifying career interests, and developing long-term educational and vocational plans. Provides guidance on course selection, college readiness, job skills, and transition planning for life after high school.
  • Social/Emotional Learning (SEL): Implements and supports SEL programs that foster students' emotional intelligence, self-awareness, resilience, and interpersonal skills. Integrates SEL principles into individual and group counseling to help students manage emotions, set positive goals, establish healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions.
  • Consultation & Collaboration: Works closely with parents, teachers, administrators, and other school staff to develop effective, individualized strategies and interventions that address the student’s unique needs.
  • Crisis Management & Intervention: Responds to crisis situations by providing immediate intervention and emotional support for students and families. Assists in de-escalating behavioral challenges and preparing students to reintegrate into the classroom.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Coordination: Acts as a liaison among students, families, schools, and community resources, including family service agencies, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, and healthcare providers, ensuring cohesive support and service delivery.
  • Behavioral Support & Intervention: Collaboratively develops behavior intervention plans and strategies that enhance students’ coping mechanisms, emotional self-regulation, and academic functioning.
  • Staff Consultation: Provides expert consultation to school personnel on student behavioral or emotional concerns, offering insights into trauma-informed practices, mental health awareness, and strategies for fostering SEL.
  • Professional Development & Training: Leads professional development sessions for school staff on relevant topics, including trauma-informed care, mental health, de-escalation techniques, student wellness, and the integration of academic, career, and SEL planning.
  • Ongoing Professionalism: Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth and collegiality and maintains current knowledge of best practices in trauma-informed care, mental health services, SEL, academic and career counseling, and counseling interventions.
  • Confidentiality & Ethics: Maintain a high standard of professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical practice, always prioritizing the best interest of the student.
