AVID TUTORS - Lake Shore Middle School/Steffen Middle School/Homestead High School
HOURS 2 hrs./week (positions may be combined to meet District needs and as allowed by scheduling)

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a K-16 college-readiness system & nonprofit organization, whose mission is to “close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness & success in a global society.” AVID supports motivated students in the academic middle who strive to succeed in rigorous courses so that they can reach their highest potential. Through the support of AVID, these students succeed in college and other postsecondary opportunities.
In the AVID Elective class, the AVID Tutor facilitates Socratic-style discussion groups aimed at helping students develop a deeper understanding of core academic concepts. To prepare for their role as facilitators in this process, AVID Tutors receive initial training and ongoing coaching relative to the AVID system & methodologies, the tutorial process, Costa’s Levels of Thinking, & Cornell note-taking.
Position Description
Qualifications:
• High school diploma required
• Current college student or college degree preferred
• Experience in teaching and/or tutoring preferred
• Dependable, conscientious, and patient
• Ability to perceive students’ needs and develop positive relationships
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions
• Effective communication skills
• Strong desire to make a difference in the lives of students
Reports to:
• Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Responsibilities:
• Attend AVID Tutor Training sessions
• Become familiar with the AVID Curriculum and AVID methodologies
• Guide and facilitate tutorial sessions for small groups of middle and/or high school students during the AVID Elective class on Tuesdays and Thursdays
• Assist students in academic problem solving
• Under the supervision of the AVID teacher, evaluate student binders, calendars, and Cornell notes
• Provide meaningful and timely feedback to students concerning their participation during the tutorial process
• Develop professional relationships with the AVID teacher and fellow AVID tutors
• Provide frequent and honest communication with the AVID Teacher regarding student progress and areas of strength/concern
• Serve as a role model for AVID students by exhibiting personal excellence and high expectations
• Demonstrate professional growth as an AVID Tutor after coaching, training, and observation opportunities provided by the AVID District Director and/or AVID Site
