Job purpose:
Under the direction of the Secondary Principal, Director of Special Education and District Administrator, the Assistant Principal is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and administering programs and services to meet identified needs. These include the development and implementation of new programs and services to assist the School District of Manawa to provide quality services to children, offer direction and support to staff, and maintain procedural compliance with state and federal laws (IDEA and Chapter 115). The Assistant Principal will collaborate with districts and outside agencies resulting in a full range of services for students in developing strategies, policies and procedures that align with the District’s mission and strategic plan. Additionally, the position will provide leadership in pupil service areas such as student records, health services, school counseling, ELL, and other programs and services as assigned.
Duties and responsibilities
Administrative:
A. Provides a nurturing school environment, rigorous curriculum and high standards.
B. Assumes responsibility for activities delegated by the Principal, which can include athletics, safety, special education, building leadership team, Restorative Practices, student teams, professional development, enrollment and programming, among others.
C. Assists and oversees staff in promoting academic excellence for all students. Coordinates academic programs and assessments with other administrators and staff to include guidance counselors, administrative assistants, and teachers.
D. Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings and provide instructional support.
E. Coordinate and assist in creation and implementation of professional development activities for all instructional staff, and support staff as appropriate.
F. Assist in the preparation of applicable budgets, manage budget implementation and provide for fiscal accountability of pupil service and building wide programs.
G. Coordinates, supervises and provides leadership in the school’s program of pupil control and discipline, including investigating incidents caused by students and others and settling related problems as appropriate ranging from counseling students up to and including expulsion; requesting assistance by resource personnel as necessary.
H. Ensures all disciplinary paperwork is processed according to regulations and established deadlines. Completes written reports, investigations and maintains all appropriate documentation.
I. Engages students in significant learning activities that provide them with opportunity to apply their learning in meaningful contexts that call for explanation, decision making, investigation, interpretation, problem solving and self assessment.
J. Guides new students to the school by assisting with enrollment, evaluating transcripts and establishing a schedule to meet the needs of students.
K. Participates in special events and evening activities (graduation, athletics competitions, open house, PT conferences, dances etc.) as directed by the Principal.
L. Actively supports the School District of Manawa Strategic Plan and goals.
Special Education
M. Collect, review, and share academic data to ensure goals are being met.
N. Provide leadership that integrates special education with regular education. Serve as liaison between special education programs, and services for children with disabilities and regular education, parents/guardians, the community, the county, and other agencies.
O. Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings and provide instructional support.
P. Coordinate and assist in creation and implementation of professional development activities for special education instructional staff, regular education staff, and support staff as appropriate.
Q. Assist in the preparation of applicable budgets, manage budget implementation and provide for fiscal accountability of pupil service programs.
R. Assist in the completion of special education report forms and district plans as required by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
S. Serves as an active member of the administrative team. Articulates a clear philosophy and shared vision for learning. Upholds and follows all District policies, guidelines, and procedures.
Pupil Services
T. Communicate with building office staff to ensure that student records are accurate in the Student Information System.
U. Evaluate and coordinate nursing services district-wide.
V. Prepare and coordinate 504 plans compliance with procedure and legal requirements to best meet student needs.
Instructional Leadership
A. Provide leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the schools’ instructional programs.
B. Oversee services within established federal, state, and district guidelines to meet student needs.
C. Assign staff members duties and supervise educational programs to maximize use of their teaching skills and educational background.
D. Promote learning in a safe and orderly environment.
Planning
A. Involve the staff in short and long-range planning at the building and district levels.
B. Support planning, implementation and evaluation of the schools’ instructional programs.
Supervision and Evaluation
A. Perform classroom evaluations of teachers annually according to the Teacher Performance Evaluation system / CESA 6 or Strong model.
Staff Development
A. Provide support for new personnel.
B. Assist in the planning of staff development activities.
C. Encourage employees to participate in training opportunities within budgetary limitations.
School-Community Relations
A. Provide opportunities for parents to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
B. Facilitate the dissemination of information of interest to the community through various media.
C. Act as a liaison between the schools and the community.
Communications
A. Maintain open lines of communication with students and staff following the Chain of Command protocol established by the District.
B. Communicate with other administrators regarding issues and developments affecting school administration.
Recruitment and Placement
A. Participate in the recruitment and hiring of district staff, as needed.
B. Make recommendations to the District on the hiring and placement of teaching and support staff.
C. Support District onboarding procedures.
Other Responsibilities
A. Administer Board policies and employment agreements.
B. Prepare reports as requested by the District Administrator.
C. Attend local and state meetings as may be necessary to carry out his/her responsibilities.
D. Perform other duties as assigned by the District Administrator.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: The District Administrator shall evaluate performance annually and report to the Board.
Education and Experience
Experience: Minimum of three years in an educational setting.
Education: Administrative Licensure
Preferred Experience: Experience as an Assistant Principal, Principal or Director of Special Education and Pupil Services is preferred
Supervision Responsibilities - Teacher, Support Staff, & Student
Certifications
- Must hold a valid driver’s license
- Valid Wisconsin Principal Administrative Licensure
Skills
Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one ‐ on ‐ one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the District. Ability to read and write English. Reading, writing, hearing, listening, and speaking effectively with the ability to analyze data.
Mathematical: Ability to calculate and provide strategic metrics as well as basic math.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to work with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
