The Fallen Timbers Maintenance/Groundskeeper directly reports to the Director of Fallen Timbers. The Maintenance/Groundskeeper will primarily maintain the Fallen Timbers Environmental Center grounds, buildings, and complete miscellaneous projects at the center throughout the calendar year. 


Essential functions of the Maintenance/Groundskeeper at Fallen Timbers includes, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates various light machinery including but not limited to: push lawn mowers, riding lawn mowers, ATVs, tractors, brush hogs, chain saws, and wood splitters.
  • Cut, clear and remove brush from various locations on the 456 acre property.
  • Maintain the trail system, which includes grooming ski trails, trail mowing, and performing general improvements.
  • Transport wood, vehicles, and other items with a trailer on and off the Fallen Timbers property.
  • Trim shrubs and trees.
  • Remove snow around buildings and on service vehicle roads.
  • Assist the Director with miscellaneous maintenance and programming needs.
  • Remove leaves from the grounds in the fall.
  • Repair and maintain machinery on the property.
  • Cut, split, stack, and transport firewood.
  • Supervise assistant maintenance/groundskeeper and volunteers. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities of this position may include:
  • Sharpen chainsaw blades.
  • Acquire fuel for machinery and mix oil with gasoline for proper proportions as necessary.
  • Perform basic carpentry.
  • Fix small engines.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance.
  • Oversee water softener and other major appliances in the Bruce Nagel Building at Fallen Timbers.
  • Assist with all steps in the production of maple syrup.
  • Maintain equipment within the budget outlined by the Director.
An Associates/Technical College degree in a related field is preferred. Prior experience in a similar position performing groundskeeping and maintenance work.
 
Basic experience and training in the areas of small engine repair. Advanced mechanical and electrical skills. Advanced knowledge of plumbing and electrical wiring. Basic computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, and faxing.
 
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic carpentry and mechanical skills.
  • Familiarity with felling trees and tree removal.
  • Skilled in the operation and upkeep of various types of machinery.
  • Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate with diverse work teams.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
  • Communicate effectively and timely, verbally and in writing.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to manage schedules and meet deadlines.
  • Remain flexible in order to adapt to changes in work environment and programming needs and hours.
  • Ability to ask for help and/or clarification as needs arise.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various types of weather and seasons.
