The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in individual students and promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. The nurse assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and/or referral activities; serves as a direct link among physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for students; provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, and staff concerning health-related issues; works cooperatively with the Dane County Public Health Nurse in the provision of public health services to schools; upholds professional standards, the state Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice, and adheres to district policies and administrative guidelines. Properly handle confidential matters relating to students, student records, parents, staff and any other school-related issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree in nursing preferred.
Valid Wisconsin license as a registered nurse. Certification by the DPI as a school nurse preferred.
Certification in CPR.
Valid driver’s license.
Experience in child health care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintain a comprehensive school health program including emergency nursing services.
Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and affect rehabilitation.
Administer first aid, as necessary, when present in the schools.
Collect information regarding immunizations, health and developmental status of students in a systematic, continuous, and confidential manner.
Develop nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions delineating school nurse and other staff responsibilities to meet the unique needs of students. (Trains and monitors staff who provide specialized care).
Serve as a health specialist member of district committees and special needs teams.
Plan and implement school health management procedures including administration of medications.
Communicate as needed with the District Health Officer about matters in which physician advice is desirable or necessary.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Collaborate with other staff members in planning to assure quality of health care provided to students.
Assist students, families, and school personnel to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education.
Advise the administration regarding health related concerns about individual students and groups.
Contribute to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice and participation in research.
