Arrowhead Union High School District is seeking applications for a part-time Theatre Technical Director.  This position provides safe, effective, and efficient operations of the auditorium to meet the learning and performance needs of all theatre users.  (The Technical Director works closely and in tandem with the Theatre Manager and two Stage Crew Advisors, often sharing some of these responsibilities.)

 The position responsibilities are as follows:

 Responsible for monitoring the safe and appropriate use of the theatre facilities, including the scene shop, stage areas, house, control booth, dressing rooms, storage areas, and catwalk areas.

  1. Responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep of the theatre, associated facilities, and all theatre equipment, including lighting, sound, scene shop tools, and rigging equipment. Conduct or arrange for the repair and replacement of equipment within budgetary constraints.  Plan and execute preventive maintenance.
  2. Serve as the technical director for district musical/drama productions (4 total).  Collaborate with designers, directors, and set builders on each production. 
  3. Instruct, train, supervise, lead, and work with student stage crew members and volunteer adults during all set construction / technical preparation and tech/dress rehearsals for the theatrical productions and rental events.
  4. In conjunction with the Theatre Manager and/or Stage Crew Advisor:
    1. Attend all technical/dress rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the show.
    2. Attend performances of theatrical productions, music concerts, and rental events in order to supervise stage crew and assist in the running of the event.
    3. Conduct pre-production and post-production walk-throughs to ensure all equipment is operational and in good working condition and that all safety rules are being adhered to.
    4. Set up and operate the lights/sound for band and choir concerts in both the theatre and a gymnasium setting.
    5. Determine, coordinate, and set up the technical needs (sound, lighting, staging, special needs) of the theatre for non-theatrical scheduled events.
  5. Communicate with the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor and custodial/maintenance staff regarding the cleanliness, repairs, maintenance and custodial needs.
  6. Participate in the annual budget development for facility and technical needs in conjunction with the Theatre Manager; make recommendations regarding future purchases of technical equipment and consumables.
  7. Set up and operate the sound system for graduation on the football field (with stage crew helpers).
  8. Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

     Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor of Arts degree in Technical Theatre or equivalent preferred.

     Minimum two years’ experience in technical theatre or theatre management.

     Previous technical training or experience on digital lighting consoles (ETC ion), moving lights, digital sound boards (Allen & Heath), Qlab, and basic scene shop tools.

     Any such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

     Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

     Knowledge of and ability to implement applicable fire and safety codes.

     Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

     Ability to maintain strict confidentiality relating to all business, personnel and school district matters

     Commitment to professional standards and ethics.

     Knowledge and ability to use computer equipment and associated theatre technical equipment (including appropriate scene shop tools, scissor lift, and basic rigging on dead-hung battens and tracks)

     While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear, use hands and fingers to handle, or touch objects and/or controls, as well as use repetitive motion of fingers, hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to bend, stoop, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift, move or carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with appropriate tools. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, depth perception and also the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment:

     The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The usual working environment of this position is that of a theatre and surrounding spaces. The person in this position will be required to attend events and activities outside the hours of the regular school day.  The employee continuously interacts with other staff members and regularly meets multiple demands from several people.
