Under the direction of the PWSSD Superintendent, the Director of Teaching and Learning performs professional-level duties related to district-wide curriculum programs and instructional practices by conducting curriculum, instruction, and assessment research; directing the curriculum and instruction development process with teachers/instructional staff; establishing and directing the curriculum review and adopting process; directing the standards alignment process; and facilitating professional development.
The Director of Teaching and Learning advises the superintendent, principals, departments, and instructional staff on curriculum and professional development requirements; reviews, evaluates, synthesizes, and facilitates the development of instructional staff capacity in all areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment; acts as a primary resource for instructional staff, building and district-level leaders in the management, review, and adoption of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Ensures educational standards, rules, regulations, and state and federal expectations are followed and leads the work of PWSSD instructional staff.
Education/Experience Required
- A minimum of a graduate degree or license certification in educational leadership or related area
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license
- Central Office and/or building administrative experience preferred
- Previous administration experience preferred
- K-12 classroom teaching experience preferred

An individual who can perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Directs the work of instructional staff and support staff around the district-adopted instructional priorities, curriculum implementation, and use of approved assessments.
- Serves as liaison and resource to instructional staff, support staff, site-level leaders, and district-level leaders for curriculum, instruction, and assessment requirements. Works collaboratively with district-level leaders, site-level leaders, and instructional staff to advise and ensure curricular development aligns with the strategic priorities and building leadership team (BLT) developed school continuous improvement plans (SCIPs), and assures PWSSD compliance with the rules and policies of the state and federal government.
- Develops leading recommendations and advises on curriculum and instructional design and development in alignment with district and site goals, identified strategic plan priorities, student pathways, and assessment.
- Provides direction and primary support for the teacher evaluation, certification process, and credit renewal process; crafts and leads courses; helps staff identify potential coursework for credit renewal, DPI certificate, and graduate-level course proposals. Reviews submitted credit requests and course proposals; and provides feedback to submitting staff, departments, committees, etc.
- Works collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure that recommendations and current work are aligned with the District’s vision, SCIP plans, state requirements, course/grade-level specifications, student course catalog publications, graduation requirements, etc.; ensures instructional staff compliance with all related requirements.
- Coordinates, facilitates, and supports initiatives related to identified work in the strategic planning process, pathway/program development, and PreK-12 vertical and horizontal alignment of PWSSD curriculum, instruction, and assessment with adopted student success initiatives.
- Coordinates, facilitates, and supports instructional staff to conduct benchmark research for the development of new courses, programs, instructional pedagogy, etc. (including feasibility, quality, and impact assessments, implementation and exit strategies, capacity studies, etc.).
- Collaborates with internal and external subject matter experts utilizing and incorporating regional, state, national, and other data sources.
- Leads, monitors, assigns, and coordinates the work of instructional staff and support staff in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
- Supports the work with learning walks, audits, and SCIP conversations with the site-level and district-level staff and leadership. Provides input related to corrective action for instructional staff as appropriate.
- Develops and implements training for instructional staff and/or site-level and district-level leaders in targeted areas of improvement, professional development days, course offerings, and/or summer learning opportunities.
- Coordinates the curriculum and programming approval process internally and assures alignment with the District’s priorities and state/federal requirements.
- Directs the work of internal grade-level and departments regarding curriculum development and requirements including coordinating, facilitating, and serving on work groups and task forces.
- Coordinates the preparation and dissemination of a variety of related reports, grants, presentations, etc. for PWSSD related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
- In partnership with the district cabinet and principals, coordinate, develop, and/or facilitate weekly administrative meetings, workshop week for new teachers, summer school, district-wide and site-specific professional development days, and after-school, weekend, and/or summer learning opportunities for staff.
