Position Details

12 month contract, 25-28 hours a week. This position requires a flexible schedule.
Part Time

Under the direction of the Berlin Area School District (BASD) superintendent, the Community Education and Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the organization, coordination, promotion, and management of a broad-based program of community education and recreation activities, including, but not limited to, the swim lesson program and the coordination of school district facilities for community use.

Clay Lamberton Elementary (4K-5), Berlin Middle School (6-8), and Berlin High School (9-12) sit on the same campus and serve as a hub of activity for the greater Berlin community. The Berlin Area School District is composed of 14 municipalities, with the City of Berlin at the center.  Berlin is a rural community with a population of 5,500 located approximately 20 minutes west of Oshkosh and 10 minutes north of Green Lake. The Fox River runs through the center of the historic Victorian downtown. Agriculture, health services, light industry and retail shops comprise Berlin’s economy.

This position will have following responsibilities, tasks, and duties:

  • Through work with district staff and community organizations, coordinate, promote, and manage a broad-based program of community recreational and educational activities, including but not limited to the swim lesson program.
  • Make recommendations for the development of Board of Education policies and administrative guidelines regarding the operation of the department.
  • Prepare and issue regular and special reports for the Superintendent.
  • Represent the BASD Community Education & Recreation Program at district, Board of Education, and community meetings as needed.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative planning and working relationships with all BASD schools, municipal departments, and community organizations.
  • Oversee the development of the department’s annual activity report.
  • Develop short and long-range department goals and plans.
  • Coordinate staff meetings to ensure the BASD Community Education & Recreation Program staff are collaborating to achieve the goals of the department.
  • Manage the annual budget development process for the BASD Community Education & Recreation Program.
  • Coordinate all budgetary planning for equipment, supplies, and materials to meet department needs.
  • Oversee the department’s ongoing marketing and public promotional information.
  • Establish, develop and maintain a recreational management software program.
  • Coordinates the hiring, supervising and evaluating of all part-time and seasonal employees.
  • Recommends hourly wage rates for part-time seasonal personnel.
  • Oversees and provides training programs for part-time personnel.
  • Assists in the development of short and long-term plans for district indoor and outdoor athletic/recreational facilities and fitness centers.
  • Makes recommendations for improvement facilities utilized for community recreation activities.
  • Updates Superintendent with ongoing BASD Community Education & Recreation Program operations.
  • Coordinates school district classroom and facility scheduling for community use meetings, activities, and events.
  • Performs other self-initiated duties or projects assigned by the Superintendent.                                                          

Salary Range:  Compensation range is $20 - $25 per hour, commensurate with education and experience; position includes participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) and paid time off.

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory/leadership role.
  • Proven leadership skills in overseeing community youth and adult education and recreation programming.
  • Strong personnel management skills, including developing a strong leadership team, assigning personnel, and delegating responsibilities with assurance and accountability.
  • Short- and long-range planning skills. Ability to assess community needs, research trends, and innovative concepts as they apply to improving program operations.
  • Ability to compose written reports and documents.
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, and interpret policy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders including, the Board of Education, school district administrators and staff, City of Berlin administrators, local non-profit organizations, and community citizens.
  • Certified as a lifeguard by the American Red Cross or ability to attain.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification required or ability to attain.  
  • Should have a history of confidentiality, stability, neatness, punctuality, loyalty, ethical consciousness, organization skills, and flexibility.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, recreation management, athletic administration, or education OR a combination of professional experience.
