WUSD will be hiring a literacy intervention paraprofessional for Whitewater Middle School. The focus of this role after 3 years may shift to a special education or ML paraprofessional placement as determined by need at the school site.

Whitewater Unified School District has elements of rural and suburban communities. The City of Whitewater has a population of approximately 14,500. Whitewater is located in southern Wisconsin, approximately 45 miles west of Milwaukee, 45 miles east of Madison, and 100 miles northwest of Chicago. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, with an enrollment of over 10,500 students, offers residents a variety of cultural and educational opportunities.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the site administrator and the direction of the Literacy Coach, the Literacy Intervention Paraprofessional performs the necessary duties to assist in the implementation of literacy programs, supports, and interventions for children. The Literacy Intervention Paraprofessional raises the literacy achievement of students who are below grade-level in reading by providing direct instruction in individual and small groups within or outside of regular classroom settings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide direct instruction to students under supervision of the teacher or coach.
- Conduct instructional activities assigned by the coach; work with individual students or small groups for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and grade-level standards.
- Implement, under the supervision of a teacher or coach, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study.
- Assist in creating an engaging and inspiring environment where children want to read.
- Assist in moving children from being emergent readers to independent readers.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress.
- Support the social and emotional needs of students through positive relationship building, appropriate support and engaging instruction.
- Work collaboratively with Literacy Coaches, classroom teachers, other paraprofessionals, and administration
- Assist classroom teachers with screening and progress monitoring assessments.
- Assist in classroom management using effective behavior management procedures.
- Assist teachers or coaches in creating, managing, and maintaining instructional materials and resources.
- Function as appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, guidance, and support.
- Adhere to the appropriate code of ethics and student confidentiality.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g. student injuries, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom.
- Maintain open communication and to keep the teachers, coaches, and administrators informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
- Participate actively in training and professional development related to this position.
- Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
- Assist with maintaining student records and updating student schedules.
- Communicate and interact professionally with adults and students.
- Attend meetings and trainings, as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to assist in instructing reading language arts, writing, and grammar
- Ability to work well with children
- Knowledge of effective behavior management procedures for school aged children
- Knowledge and ability to use current technology in an educational setting including relevant hardware and software used in the classroom
- Ability to listen and speak with competence in Standard American English (SAE)
- Spanish bilingual preferred
- Experience working in an instructional environment
- Experience or education in the areas of child development
- Two or more years of study at an institution of higher education preferred
