The Berlin Area School District is seeking a professional, personable, self-starting, motivated, highly organized, and self reflective Communications Specialist. This individual will work closely with the Superintendent, school administrators, District staff, school board, local media, and the public to develop and implement a comprehensive communication and marketing plan for the District. This position requires both technical skills as well as strong people skills and the ability to develop relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. The Berlin Area School District has a student enrollment of approximately 1,400 students and is composed of three schools. Clay Lamberton Elementary (4K-5), Berlin Middle School (6-8), and Berlin High School all sit on the same campus in the heart of the City of Berlin. The campus serves as a hub of activity for the greater Berlin, WI community. The Berlin Area School District is composed of 14 municipalities, with the City of Berlin at the center. Berlin is a rural community with a population of 5,500 located approximately 20 minutes west of Oshkosh and 10 minutes north of Green Lake. The Fox River runs through the center of the historic Victorian downtown. Agriculture, health services, light industry and retail shops comprise Berlin’s economy. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: 1. Coordinates a variety of activities for the Superintendent related to communications, staff meetings, public meetings, workshops, professional development, and school visits. 2. Coordinates communications and public relations for the District. 3. Develops, follows, and monitors the District communication plan. 4. Coordinates and develops, designs, and produces visual presentations and materials used for communication and presentation purposes. 5. Develops and maintains the District website and apps, supporting accurate and effective public and staff communication systems. 6. Plans and organizes special events and activities to enhance and support the District public relations. 7. Supports and monitors District and public social media activities. 8. Drafts and sends emails, texts, and phone messages to staff and the public for regular communication purposes as well as in the case of emergencies. 9. Serves as the communication liaison between the media and the District. Prepares and distributes news releases, articles, and interviews. Responds to media requests. 10. Provides professional development and support for District employees and leadership to enhance and grow their public relations skills and tools. 11. Provides support for the Superintendent in completing projects as assigned to meet the needs of the school sites, District departments, and school board. 12. Manages and assists the Superintendent in designing newsletters, flyers, mailers, and slide presentations for meetings, public forums, and referendum planning. 13. Develops and maintains a system to support the Superintendent in District continuous improvement efforts by creating feedback loops from various stakeholders through staff and public meetings, surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and other methods. 14. Attends evening and weekend school and public functions including all school board meetings. 15. Supports emergency preparedness, crisis planning, and responses for the District. 16. Maintains regular, prompt, and flexible attendance at all District workplace and related activities. 17. Must be project driven, able to multitask, and handle multiple projects simultaneously and complete them accurately and on time. 18. May be required to develop school board agendas and post legal notices related to school board meetings. 19. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent. Education and Experience: Bachelor Degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field, and/or the equivalent experience in education or business communications. Three to five years experience working in the field of communications and public relations. Must be able to demonstrate the necessary skills and deliverables for the position.
