This opening is for a special education paraprofessional working with adult students who have intellectual disabilities. The position will support adult students in a variety of vocational, recreational and life skills-based experiences within the school building and out in the community. You will assist in job coaching at various partner businesses, support students in daily living and recreational activities, communicate with general and special education staff, provide structure and feedback, and support students with personal care.
Qualifications • Ability to apply for and receive a Department of Public Instruction Special Education IA license • Ability to support students in vocational settings and in community settings (job coaching) • Possession of a valid driver's license and a clean driving record; ability to drive school vehicles • Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and give oral and written instructions • Ability to work effectively in a team environment • Excellent communication skills • Desire to work with students age 18-21 with diverse needs Essential Job Functions 1. Reinforce concepts and instruction to individual or small groups of special education students as lessons as directed by the teacher. 2. Provide one-on-one and group instruction in both classroom and community vocational settings. 3. Provide job coaching under the direction of the teacher and Transition Specialist. 4. Be patient and flexible in making quick changes in a daily lesson for individuals or group. 5. Use appropriate student behavior management strategies. 6. Learn teacher-developed behavioral strategies that increase student independence, motivation and self-esteem 7. Work with students who require physical lifting, positioning, toileting, feeding and grooming activities. 8. Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the teacher. 9. Maintain confidentiality about all personal information, assessment results, and other records concerning students and their families 10. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. 11. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with fellow workers and members of the public and partner sites. 12. Assist and supervise students with learning, emotional, behavioral and/or physical needs in various environments. 13. Provide health care for designated students as needed after appropriate training. 14. Perform delegated medical procedures under the direction and training of the school nurse. 15. Instruct and assist in toilet training, personal hygiene, eating habits, proper manners and other self-help skills as directed by the teacher. 16. Provide prevocational and work experience supervision, and provide assistance at the jobsite if students are of transition age. 17. Assist in restraining and removing physically aggressive children from the instructional setting within board policy and with specialized training. 18. Operate equipment used for instructional and physical needs after support and training is provided. 19. Assist in student recordkeeping, such as behavioral data, grades, class work, health data, etc. 20. Assist in preparing the classroom environment for instructional activities, such as bulletin boards, learning centers, student work centers, student desks, etc. 21. Perform other duties as assigned by authorized personnel. 22. Serve as the chief source of information for the substitute teacher. 23. Assist in the reinforcement of behavior modification programs. 24. Keep all program/student information confidential. 25. Maintain a current assistant substitute folder. 26. Conference on a regular basis with the certified teacher to discuss and gain an understanding of the focus and implementation of the educational program detailed within the IEP. 27. Maintain good communication and rapport with staff and parents under the direction of the teacher. Expectations 1. Comply with all district and departmental guidelines and expectations 2.
