Positions work on average 5.5 hours per day.
General Responsibilities:
1. Work with individual students or small groups of students as directed to reinforce learning of material or skills.
2. Supervise students in lunchroom, outside and other areas as assigned.
3. Assist with clerical tasks.
4. Be familiar with all classroom and school rules and procedures and provide assistance and direction to students in a positive but firm manner.
5. Make discipline referrals when school rule violations occur.
6. Willing to be trained to perform medical procedures such as care for diabetic students and administer Epi-pen. Etc.
Requirements Specific to Position:
1. Experience in working with school-aged children with special needs.
2. Ability to promote independence and self-help skills.
3. Current CPR certification and First Aid Training or commitment to obtain such upon request.
4. Knowledge of or a willingness to learn assistive technology.
5. Knowledge of autism or willingness to work with students with autism and learn behavioral management skills.
6. Working with students with disabilities can be an extremely physical position. Students may be in or using adaptive equipment, or have tendencies to run, push, climb, bite, hit or exhibit other forms of aggressive behavior. Extreme patience and physical abilities are required to handle these students in what can sometimes be very stressful situations.
7. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds in a two person lift.
8. Duties may include toileting and diapering.
Qualifications:
1. Ability to exercise good judgment in firmly enforcing classroom and school rules.
2. Position requires ability to move quickly, run, and restrain students, if necessary.
3. Above average human relations skills, demonstrating effective verbal/written communications with students, staff, parents and others encountered on the job.
4. Initiative and self-motivation to work independently.
5. Ability to work in a positive manner and keep school matters confidential.
6. Possesses the mathematics and language skills necessary to support student learning.
7. Knowledge of technology including Google Docs, Microsoft Office
8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.
