Under the direction of the Director of Pupil Services, the licensed Special Education Coordinator is a leadership position that serves as a liaison between administration, school staff, students, families, and community agencies that support students. This position provides leadership relative to special education policies and procedures, as well as effective practices relative to models of intervention for students who may be struggling academically and/or behaviorally. Essential Functions: • Comply with all procedural requirements of state and federal law in regard to the special education process • Provide direction and ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including assisting with program compliance, policy development, maintaining related student records, and investigating and resolving complaints. • Advise and monitor special education staff in the administration of student eligibility, placement, programming, dismissal, and follow-up in the area of special education. • Build effective relationships among parents, school staff, other school districts, community service providers, and state agencies in the area of special education. • Assist with placement and enrollment of new students with disabilities. • Assist the Director of Pupil Services in coordinating specific projects, such as: review of IEPs and evaluations, Extended School Year services, monitoring compliance with IDEA timelines, including progress reporting. • Evaluate special education paraprofessionals. • Assist with the training and development of new special education staff. • Act as a resource to teachers, administrators, and parents in brainstorming and offering solutions to problems. • Facilitate IEP meeting/MDR as a local education agency (LEA) representative with parents, community members and instructional teams. • Homeless Liaison and Foster Care point of contact • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Services. • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees, as required Qualifications: • Master’s Degree in Special Education, School Psychology, Educational Administration or related field required • Valid license for position as established by Wisconsin DPI • Meeting facilitation experience • Knowledge of principles, practices and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities. • Knowledge of procedural requirements required by Federal and State law with regard to the education of students with disabilities • Experience working with youth in an educational setting • Minimum of 5 years in the educational setting • Valid Driver’s License Required Preferred: • Administrative license, or working toward a license as Director of Special Education or Director of Student Services Personal Attributes Required: • Ability to work productively in a team and as a self-starting individual • Ability to provide leadership • Ability to effectively analyze needs and problems objectively • Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, school staff, other school districts, community service providers, and state agencies in the area of special education • Ability to work on a regular and punctual basis Essential Physical / Mental Requirements: Must be able to... • regularly stand, sit, walk • communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide accurate information and assistance • commute to all BASD buildings for support • maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and detail
