Located in south central Wisconsin, the Stoughton Area School District is an award-winning school system that consistently posts a higher graduation rate than many Dane County schools and has garnered national recognition for its educational practices. We offer three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and a virtual school through a consortium of other area school districts. Job Summary:
The School Guidance Counselor is responsible for the delivery of the developmental guidance model in the academic, personal, social and career/vocational areas; for individual and group counseling to students; student program planning and transition plans; consultation to parents and staff; as well as working with the student assistance program.
Reports To:
Building Principal
Mental Health Coordinator:
1. Oversee District-wide mental health and social/emotional supports, ensuring that supports are implemented throughout all buildings
2. Collaborate with community partners including mental health providers, Journey, SWC, Rainbow Project
3. Ensure that supports and programs are following established timelines
4. Facilitate teams
5. Experience in grant writing and grant coordination
Essential Job Functions:
1. Maintain competency, certification and assignment level in the area of school guidance counseling.
2. Coordinate a planned sequence of developmental guidance activities.
3. Provide consulting services to teachers, administrators, parents and other service providers.
4. Counsel students in personal, social, learning, vocational, and career areas on an individualized, large-group, and small-group basis.
5. Share information and facilities referrals to outside service providers.
6. Assist in the coordination, administration, interpretation and evaluation of the District’s testing programs.
7. Participate in guidance and counseling program evaluation.
8. Participate in process of instructional improvement.
9. Interpret progress and behavioral records for assigned students.
10. Promote the development of the student’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual abilities.
11. Participate in grade level transition activities.
12. Work with the school psychologist in coordinating specialized student programming.
13. Work cooperatively with building principals, staff and the community.
14. Comply with the absence policies of the District.
Requirements of Essential Functions:
Occasional (1-33%) bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, walking, squatting, reaching and stair climbing in order to perform the essential job functions.
Lifting: 0 –10 pounds constantly (66-100%)
Marginal Job Functions:
1. Attend District meetings.
2. Enroll, withdraw, orientate and schedule students.
3. All other duties assigned which relate to the functions of the job.
Job Qualifications:
1. Certification and/or licensure as a School Guidance Counselor.
2. Master’s degree or it’s equivalent, representing coursework in the principles and practice of educational guidance; educational testing and measurement; counseling; the organization and administration of guidance services; and the psychology of learning.
3. Excellent communication skills in order to work effectively with community, parents, students and staff.
