*This position requires a teaching license; a principal license is preferred.* SUMMARY : Under the direction of the Principal, the Dean of Students is a non-administrative position responsible for assisting the principal and assistant principals to maintain an orderly and safe school environment for all students. The Dean of Students is responsible for supporting administration in handling student discipline and attendance issues. The Dean of Students is expected to complete and document investigations thoroughly, contact parents/guardians, and collaborate with student services staff to develop interventions and support for students who may have violated the code of conduct and/or board policy. The Dean of Students will engage in proactive work with students, families, and student services to maximize an environment of belonging for all students. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES : ● Facilitate and coordinate various pro-active student centered initiatives within the building, such as Peer Mediation, Student Assistance Program, etc. ● Serve as member in the chain of command in the absence of an administrator (and/or guidance counselor) ● Work with School Social Worker and Attendance/Engagement Specialist in coordinating and administering student attendance policies ● Serve as resource person in identifying and solving classroom problems ● Supervise students on campus before and after school, monitors students during lunch, passing periods ● Promote and assist in the area of student guidance ● Support and provide leadership for Student Support Services ● Serve on PST and attendance meetings as needed ● Assist with coordinating the building emergency plan ● Desire to work with diverse populations ● Interest in supporting students in after school/extracurricular activities ● Other duties as assigned by the building principal QUALIFICATIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Dean of Students Position Description Page 2 School District of Waukesha EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE : ● Certified as a classroom teacher, special education teacher or guidance counselor in the state of Wisconsin, at the grade levels required of the specific building in which the position is located ● Principal certification (preferred, but not required) ● Knowledge of PBIS / RTI / Other (e.g. Love and Logic, TRIBES) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : ● A strong background in the area of classroom management, effective instruction, curriculum integration, cooperative learning and other instructional strategies ● Ability to work collaboratively within a large school community that functions under a shared governance structure ● Strong student connections, communication, leadership and team-building skills ● Ability to develop higher levels of hope and engagement in students ● A strong background in student/behavior management ● Ability to work in a fast paced, high needs environment ● Ability to work with classroom teachers using individual and group student intervention strategies ● Experience or background in working directly with the development of students’ social, emotional and physical needs ● Ability to provide inservice and support to teaching and paraprofessional staff in the areas of student management ● Ability to offer leadership at the building level LANGUAGE SKILLS : ● Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, federal, state, and/or DPI regulations, handbooks, computer and other manuals, budget reports and statistical data ● Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals ● Ability to interpret and communicate reports, procedures, and computer applications to faculty, staff, and students ● Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
