The Wauwatosa School District seeks a full-time Academic Specialist for multiple Elementary Schools.
Position Title: Academic Specialist
Department/Location: Department of Academic Performance
Job Classification: Teacher (Exempt)
Reports to: Director of Continuous Improvement
Supervises: N.A.
Position Summary
Academic Specialists are responsible for delivering intervention, at increasing levels of intensity, to accelerate student learning for those students that supporting classroom teachers and schools in the assessment and quick dissemination of recommendations to address academic challenges exhibited by students. The Academic Specialist is a confident and experienced educator who has training in proactively addressing academic challenges identified by teachers. Additionally, the Academic Specialist is an informed practitioner who is consistently providing written counsel and in-person/virtual presentations to faculty and staff interested in developing their capacity in meeting the needs of students with learning gaps in specific academic areas.
Qualifications:
Certification through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in one of the following areas:
5013- Gifted and Talented
5014 - Title I
5015 - Children at Risk
License in Special Education or 316 - Reading License strongly preferred
Strong communication skills
Strong organization skills
Knowledge of effective teaching practices
Ability to design lessons that meet the educational needs of all students
Ability to work in a collaborative manner with other staff members
Strong understanding of multi-level systems of support (MLSS)
Strong understanding of the progression Wisconsin English Language Arts and Mathematical standards in addition to Mathematical Practice Standards
Strong data literacy skills
Experience working with diverse learners and supporting culturally responsive practices (preferred)
Essential Functions:
An ability to establish collaborative relationships with teachers
Demonstrated skill in analyzing student performance data to determine academic recovery needs of individual students.
Demonstrated history of building and maintaining strong relationships with students.
Past experience in assisting teachers Identifying instructional practices that can be incorporated into their existing work and daily routine of the classroom to assist academically struggling students.
Ability to use practical data collection tools.
Past experience in fostering a problem-solving and supportive environment for students and educators.
Past experience in encouraging accountability and fidelity through partnerships with teachers.
Demonstrate knowledge of an array of best practices including programs and interventions that assist teachers in accelerating the academic recovery of students.
Past experience in providing support and guidance to classroom teachers to learn and explore what works in their specific learning environment as it pertains to their instructional practice and the academic support of all students
Essential Job Duties:
Serve as the lead interventionist for the school’s students with most significant academic needs
Consult with educators on a variety of evidence-based practices that address academic recovery for identified students.
Provide student specific feedback on strategies and practices that will support transference of learning from intervention to classroom.
Partner with educators (aides, interventionists, coaches, teachers) to identify classroom procedures, strategies and interventions that are meant to increase student academic growth.
The academic specialist will assist in identifying evidence-based practices for academic intervention and supply educators with information on how to monitor student progress.
Schedule daily/weekly/bi-weekly consulting meetings with the educator to review data, analyze outcomes, and discuss the necessity for updating academic intervention plans.
Convene and lead principals to focus on providing consistent support to high level students.
Collaborate with families and the student in communicating the need for an academic intervention plan and the role of the student and family in said plan.
Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
Complies with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.
