The Wauwatosa School District seeks a full-time Dean of Students for Longfellow and Whitman Middle School (2 positions, 1 assigned to each school).

Supervises: N.A.
Position Summary: The Dean of Students is a non-administrative position responsible for assisting the Principal and Associate Principal to maintain an orderly and safe school environment for all students. The Dean of Students is responsible for supporting the administration in handling student discipline issues. The Dean of Students is expected to complete and document investigations thoroughly, contact parents and collaborate with school site student services staff to develop interventions and support for students who may have violated the code of conduct. The Dean of Students will also proactively work with students and families to improve the school environment to maximize the level of inclusion and belonging for all students.
Qualifications:
Relevant certification through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
Knowledge of effective teaching practices
Ability to design lessons that meet the educational needs of all students
Ability to work in a collaborative manner with other staff members
Knowledge of the key components of professional learning communities (preferred)
Knowledge of PBIS and MLSS (preferred)
Understanding of relevant common core standards (preferred)
Qualifications:
At least three years of K-12 teaching experience or equivalent human services/development experience
Prior experience in student supervision
Experience working with diverse populations of youth and young adultsPast experience in establishing and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships with students and families.
Relates to students with mutual respect while carrying out a positive and effective disciplinary program.
Essential Job Functions:
Work cooperatively with school personnel in protecting the physical and emotional health and welfare of students and staff.
In coordination with the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, develop a plan for family and student engagement related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
Models use of restorative practices as a proactive and responsive approach to disciplinary issues along with standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.
Assists the administration in providing student supervision in the school.
Implements proactive strategies to expand student engagement in order to increase students’ sense of belonging.
Maintains data related to attendance, referrals, disciplinary actions and monitoring intervention progress and goal attainment.
Fulfills disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; presents investigatory findings at disciplinary hearings.
Supervises students on campus before and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and MLSS Team meetings.
Completes training as directed such as Cognitive Coaching, Restorative Practices, Crisis Prevention and Intervention, etc.
Provides individual and group guidance for students to support positive decision-making.
Performs other duties as assigned.
