POSITION SUMMARY: This position is 1:1 working with Autism student. Position is 37. 5 hours per week (M-F 7:30-3:30) The Autism Education Support Specialist supports communication and behavior needs for students with autism receiving intensive intervention services. This person provides transition support across environments and engages staff members to disrupt unsuccessful communication patterns in order to support student success. This person will work in coordination with KASD staff and community agencies to support student developmental needs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Work directly with students and in collaboration with additional staff members, to support student developmental needs as outlined in the student’s plan/program. Provide emotional, behavioral, and physical support to students. Identify and document student progress, challenges, and additional needs. Support students in a variety of physical settings that may include the school, social, and community environments. Program student assistive technology devices as appropriate to facilitate communication. Participate in training related to Autism Spectrum Disorder, strategies, and supports that align with District and community agency values and overall program goals. Honor student communication, participate as a partner in student-led play and learning activities, and meet student needs in order to support the development of a trusting and authentic relationship with the student. Perform other duties as assigned. HIRING SPECIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Excellent communication & listening skills. Ability to work well and take direction from others. Ability and willingness to learn new skills and take on new tasks. Strong advocacy skills and willingness to disrupt communication patterns in the learning environment that are unproductive. Willingness to understand their own triggers and step away from a situation if needed when triggered. Self-awareness and ability to handle crisis situations, including physical & emotional aggression Ability to adjust to quickly changing situations. Demonstrate compassion and respect to all with a passion for working with individuals with disabilities Ability to take ownership for actions. DESIRED: Experience working with students with Autism. Familiarity with special education service provision or Individual Education Program (IEP) implementation in schools. You will need to apply to DPI for a Special Education Program Aide License.
